I am in my front yard. We have lots of crab apples.
What an interesting name for an apple.
It sure does not look like a crab?
Our house is located in a subdivision that used to be a peach and apple orchard. We are the only one on our block that still have an apple tree.
What is a crab apple tree?
It is a dwarf size tree that bears small fruited apple.
Can you eat a crab apple?
Yes. However it is very sour/tart.
Many use crab apples to make candy, jellies and pickles.
Unfortunately, we don’t utilize these crab apples since we lived here. We were told due to the age of the tree it is only for ornamental purposes.
Well, lots of my furry friends (chipmunks and squirrels) are having a tasty time munching these crab apples.
Also, some of the kids on my block use these crab apples for a fun apple prints painting art.
We love having a crab apple tree on our front yard.
Many say having a fruit bearing tree in your front yard is said to lead to good fortune. Due to the bad weather we had for the past months, we noticed many branches fell off, lots of black and brown spots on the leaves and the crab apples are very bruised.
My family used a special fertilizer and hoping to revive it
… so will see what happens in Spring.

Wow! A tennis ball tree! How lucky is that 🙂 (and it attracts squirrels too!)
Wyatt
Those are not what we called crabapples. The crabapples I know are very small (about the size of large cherries) and extremely bitter. You couldn't eat our crabapples by themselves.
We too used to have a crab apple tree, but with smaller red apples. We loved them as kids. No one I knew ever heard of crab apples trees. We also had a pear tree that was just delicious! We'd almost get sick eating so many of them.
Hope your tree feels better in the spring. Don't you look cute showered with pretty green apples??
That Wyatt…isn't he funny! It's pretty cool that you have a crab apple tree! We have real apple trees, but we have had so many problems with them the last couple of years…even though we spray, the bugs have been getting to them. We are pretty happy that the squirrels and chippies love them though….it is fun to watch them!!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
SHE grew up with crabapple trees; but all the kids just used to throw them at each other!!!!
XXXOOO Daisy, Kendra & Bella
I bet those crab apples could make great jam and sauce with enough sugar…
Slobbers,
Mango
Don't the squirels get crabby from eating them? Just wondering……Lovies, Miss Mindy
we have an avocado tree and a grapefruit tree, both of which we can eat the fruit. no crab apples here in FL. but lots of fruit trees.
I like the idea of a tennis ball tree!
Nubbin wiggles,
Oskar
Sorry that your tree has the sickies. One of our new Little ones actually DIED this summer… I hope that doesn't happen to YOUR tree.
I think that your mom could actually peel and cook those apples… Butt it is very much nice that the neighbor kids use them.. and we just won't speak about those Squirrels. OK
Crap apples, never seen them. But our brother has trees in his yard that produce tennis balls as well. Mom says these are walnuts. Sniffs, The HoundDogs
Thanks for that info Sugar. We agree that is a funny name for an apple.
Benny & Lily
Well at least someone is enjoying the apples. Grandma and Grandpa had a crab apple tree before they moved.
Da squirrels are eating da crabby applies? UhOh….Dis won't make 'em SUPER SQUIRRELS, will it?
We just noticed that a crab apple tree is dropping apples on the last acre of our property! We are psyched!
Love ya lots
Maggie and Mitch
I have never had one of those but Beth said she use to make jelly out of them….
We would probably be chewing on those crabapples. Bob and Ping love eating the Huckleberries from the bush in our backyard
Our backyard neighbors have one of those trees and the apples fall off into our yard. It does bring the squirrls around though!
I'll bet the squirrels love your yard and all those treats. Have a great day!!
I didn't know these things about crab apples. Thanks for the history lesson.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. My best to your mom. 🙂
We saw lots of crab apples on the ground the other day but they were a lot smaller and crabbier than that (well, I thought they looked crabby). But I didn't know all that stuff about them. Thanks.
Love and licks, Winnie
OMC Sugar I had no idea that my BOGO Purina would count for Tasty Tuesday….I just added my link.
Crab apple is a funny name for a delicious fruit. Mom and I get a kick out of the name
"Bumble Bee Tuna"!! Who in their right mind would eat tuna made from bubble bees? Not this Diva for sure,
Hugs from your BFFF,
Madi
Happy Tuesday, Sugar! You look gorgeous as always posing with those apples! 🙂
Hi Y'all,
You're missing a great chance! Take one of those to your human and get them to throw it! They make great balls and even bounce pretty good.
Y'all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Very cool! I grew up in a house with a plum tree in the front yard. It was fantastic. I would go outside, climb the tree, and eat plums for hours!
Do crab apples go well on tacos? Just wondering. 🙂
Hugs,
We have never seen a crab apple, but we are glad that the squirrels and other little animals are getting food! Our Mama is trying to grow a tomato tree on her windowsill! Do you think it will work? We like tomatoes! 😉
Oh thank you so much ive always wondered what they were but never researched it haha. we have alot of them here in Texas
Sugar, you always look so very happy wherever you are! Our friend next door, Blue, has a crab apple tree in his dad's yard and he is laying among the apples that haven't been carried away by the squirrels and chipmunks! There is also a walnut tree in front that the squirrels are really having a great time with along with the chipmunks. It's fun to watch them! Lots of love, Debbie & Holly
Itmust be lots of fun for your humans to have to clean up all those crabs. Mom says the best thing about a crab apple tree is how pretty it is when it flowers in the Spring.
Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
