A tasty human treat that can make many dogs very ill.
Chocolate is one of the most common causes of canine poisoning.
What makes chocolate poisonous to dogs?
Chocolate is made from cocoa. Cocoa bean contain caffeine.
Theobromine is a component of chocolate.
Both caffeine and theobromine are both toxic compound in chocolate.
Unlike humans, dogs body cannot break down the toxic compound found in chocolate.
Chocolate is poisonous to dogs.
According to ASPCA Poison Control “as little as 20 ounces of milk chocolate or 2 ounces of baking chocolate can cause problems for a 10 pound dog.”

I know it’s bad for me, but I still beg and drool for chocolate!!
~Higgins
i’m not allowed chocolates too.. but that sure looks like a mighty delicious piece of brown.
woofs n licks,
Dommy
Uh oh…mama forgot that today was Tasty Tuesday!!! Thank you for the PSA about the chocolate. We know that we aren’t supposed to eat it…but Beemer seems to have a problem with remembering that…he has been known to get into bags that smell like that! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
A great reminder because you are absolutely right!! Dark chocolate is the worst…I had a senior dog eat an entire king size milk chocolate bar once. The emergency vet told me it was ‘okay’ and that he would be just fine but maybe get an upset tummy. He was but it was only because of the amount of cocoa in a Hershey bar wasn’t enough to really harm him–THANKFULLY!! But it still made me really nervous, because you just never, ever know that maybe it won’t be!!
Its so important to be really careful with chocolate. I remember when I was in high school a dog known to my parents died after eating a big bag of chocolate chips
I’m only allowed doggy chocolate buttons, and then only if I’ve been good! Woof!
Isn’t it strange how the things that taste and smell the best are always the ones really bad for us? We always have to hide all our chocolate as ‘someone’s’ nose is super keen and will find not stop searching until he’s found the chocolate! :o)
That cake looks delicious Sugar! It’s just too bad it’s off limits for you. 🙁
Hey Sugar!
Wow, my Mom always says she’s pretty happy about this because she never wants to share her chocolate with anyone! BOL
Grr and Woof,
Sarge, COP
I even tell Elka “You can’t have this, it’s chocolate” if I’m eating something with chocolate in it. She would still happily take if off my hands, I’m sure, and thankfully she’s a big enough dog that it wold take an okay amount, depending. Still, we’re very careful with it!
Woof woof! Good reminder Sugar. You’re such a smart girl. I always *want* a bite of the Mama’s chocolate cake and she NEVER let’s me have it. I thought she was just being a cake hog, but maybe she is just trying to keep me safe.
I am NOT allowed to even have a taste of that stuff!
Indiana stole half of a chocolate muffin once and I almost had a heart attack. Luckily, it was not baking or dark chocolate (and still a pretty small amount) so he was fine.
thanks for the info, i knew not to give chocolate to the dogs but not the why of it.
Just my mom and dad get to eat the chocolate stuffs in my house. Good Reminder Girrrrl.
Chocolate is one of Mom’ favorites but we know we are not allowed to have any. It is so poisoness to us.Happy Mardi Gras day. Take care.
Good to know Sugar…here I thought mom was trying to pull the wool over my eyes when she told me chocolate was bad for me. It certainly looks yummy
Hugs Madi
We are joining in your blog hop today as we celebrate Mardi Gras “Fat Tuesday!” Great tips on chocolate…wish I could give it up, it’s my weakness and Sugar, that piece sure looks good to this human! But we must keep our furpals away and – if our furpals can’t have it, we should just keep it away (they won’t get sick and we won’t be tempted to eat it!) Happy Fat & Tasty Tuesday!
Great reminder Sugar!
Dachshund Nola
That cake sure looks yumzers, but we’re not allowed chocolate, much to our dismay heheh! Thanks for coming to say hi to us so much, when we’ve been such bad bloggie buds – you ARE a golden girl!
Big Hugs xoxoxo

Must stay away from chocolate. 🙂
I remember visiting you when you were talking about watermelon.
Chocolate is a no no. Lee does not even buy it because I am a begger.
Now my vet says I can have peanut butter. That is my treat.
We stopped by to say thanks for the words of encouragement yesterday.
Sweet William The Scot
I knew that chocolate was a no-no and thanks to you I now know why. Thanks Sugar.
Have a woof woof day. My best to your mom. 🙂
Great reminder. I don’t get to have any either. MOM is not much of a chocolate fan. But her brother works for Hershey’s and he always gives her tons of chocolate. But lucky for MOM she donates it to the homeless shelter. I wish Uncle Mike worked at a Yummie Dog Treat place.
Blessings,
Goose
I keep any chocolate up high when it is out for a party or such. Some poochies are real smart at finding a way to get at human treats…I’ve heard some interesting stories of that…by the way…that slice of cake looks VERY good!
Your blog is always informative and you are always so beautiful, sweetie…Happy Mardi Gras, precious Sugar=Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!…xoxo…Calle, Halle, Sukki, Mommy Cat, Daddy Cat
Mommy won’t share anything chocolate with me. She says she loves me too much! However, she does give me carob!! I really like that stuff!
Doggy Kisses,
Tanner
Thanks for the reminder, Sugar! It’s very impawtant!
Stewey
Thanks for the reminder and spreading the word that chocolate is a no-no for doggies!! (Especially so close after Valentine’s!) Glad your mom enjoyed the cake – it looks delicious!
Wow, we didn’t know such a small amount could have that much of an effect, thanks for sharing!

More for the moms! But no chocolate for the pups!
Man, is there nothing I can eat. No raisens, no grapes, no this no that and now NO CHOCOLATE. My live is over…..well not over but I won’t be enjoying it as much.
But seriously….thanks for the info.
Love
Bert
Mom must already know about this because even when I give her the sad eyes she won’t share her chocolate with me
You’ll always have mud!
Hello,
