It’s been 30 days since I moved here in Maui, HI. Many of you have asked how I got here.
Well, moving to a new place especially in Hawaii was a long process and takes lots of patience.
Moving to Hawaii requires quarantine. Hawaii is the only state in the US that is rabies free.
120 days is the standard quarantine time.
First I had to go to the vet and get checked.
Making sure my rabies/vaccinations shots are current and my microchip properly placed.
My vet also had screened me for FAVN test. Remember this post, click here. I actually had to go twice because I was supposed to fast in order for the FAVN test to be correct.
We had to wait for about a week to get the result form the FAVN test. Since I am a service dog, my mom had to submit several required documentation to Hawaii’s department of Agriculture.
Once we got the approval we had to inform them of our flight information. We had to wait about 2 weeks for the permit to arrive in the mail in which I had to attached it on my sd vest. 7 days before my flight, I had to go again to the vet, click here for my post. It’s the final physical check up and more paperwork need to be filled out by my vet.
We are very lucky that Hawaii recently changed their requirements for pet release arriving in specific HI island. Hawaii does not require a pet to arrive first in Ohau. However, your pet still needs to be check by Hawaiian Agriculture representative. One option that my family did was to hire the services of a local animal clinic to help us with the required papers and releasing me when I arrived in Maui. Remember the more paperwork that my vet had to filled out… important papers that we had to show/submit to the release doctor representative. I did not have any issues as everything was all good. It only took about 10 minutes and I was good to go … that’s the time my mom placed a lei on me for my official time of arrival in Maui, Hi my new home.
YES I took 2 plane rides, Chicago – LA and LA to Maui. I got my doggy blanket to lay in the plane. It was a very comfortable trip especially LA to Maui. I got great first class service from the flight crew. I slept most of the time. I took a potty break when I was in LA. Yes FAA did check me and had no issues going through security check by myself.
Here are some of the photos taken during my trip from Chicago, IL – Maui, HI
Waiting for the place to board, ORD to LAX.A short potty break at LAX airport. Lots of friendly designated area for dogs.
Waiting for boarding LAX to OGG (Maui)
In the plane … Are we there yet?
Waiting for our luggage … Mmm my luggage was nowhere to be found but I finally arrived in my new home, Maui, HI. My 1st official ALOHA arrival photo.
Hope the information I provided were helpful and answered most of your curiosity.

SUGAR
Sugar and Mom, I have wondered about the quarantine issue. My brother who was in the Navy took his lab when they were stationed there and he had the 120 days away from his family. I didn’t know if they had since changed that, but now I know that it’s because of who you are, what you do, and what a special girl you are they haven’t! I’m so glad and thankful it all worked out, and you’re in your beautiful new home and are happy!
What a voyage!!! It was sure worth it all though. I love your first pic in your new home.
Hi Sugar,
This is so very interesting. I think you were very brave to fly all that way. I am pretty sure I would have been scared. My family has never been to Hawaii, but it is definitely on the list of places to visit.
Your pal, Pip
That was quite a process but we’re glad you don’t have to be quarantined for 120 days away from your family. We’re glad you are enjoying your new Hawaiian home!
Sugar, I just love reading about your new home and how you got there! The pictures are all lovely of you as always! You make me smile sweet Sugar! Lots of love, Debbie
That was very interesting Sugar. We wondered the same thing sbut just havent asked.

Boy they really had you work to get there didn’t they. Did you really get to sit in first class, cause I only get to go in coach, but they usually let us sit up by the door so I can stretch. At least that was when I was a full fledged search adn rescue dog. Now if we were to travel, I would have to ride with the luggage so My Vickie and I don’t plan on going anwhere that we can’t drive to.
I bet you were a hit in the airport with lots of little kids coming up and hugging on you. I know My Vickie would want to hug you if she saw you in the airport.
I am glad you are there safely and enjoyig your great life next to that huge pool called an ocean.
Love
Bert
Interesting info Sugar, thank you. What a journey!

Sure it was hard work to get in order all the requirments!
Glad everything went well…. except for your luggage!
Happy saturday!
Kisses and hugs

Wow! We are so glad that you and your mom explained that all to us as we were wondering about the trip and how you got there! Sure glad that you are a certified service dog or it would not have been very much fun for you. First Class must have been really special for you AND for the flight crew!! Did you have lots of people come up to you in the airport?? Our favorite picture is the one where you have your “necklace” on! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
That’s a lot of red tape, Sugar, but well worth finally getting to wear the lei in Hawaii, your new home!
Love ya lots,
Mitch
It is very obvious that your mom made all the correct moves… before the REAL move. I am glad that it was so easy for you. Thank you for telling us all about it. It will help others who are planning to fly.
Aloah
i had no idea it was so involved for you to move there. glad you had friends kind to you while you traveled, you were very brave and look wonderful in that lei.
Hey Sugar!
Wow, what an amazing adventure! I bet the airport was interesting…and my Mom says it’s very pretty too. Love your Aloha arrival pix!
Grr and Woof,
Sarge, COP
What a great little traveler you are, Sugar!
So glad you didn’t have to be quarantined 120 days. Mommy says that is way to long to be away from the ones you love. Guess we will never get to visit Hawaii. The Dad is on Oahu now, but the Mom didn’t have any frequent flyer miles so she missed out on getting to go. She is kinda sad about it, but she has already been to Oahu once. She would love to visit Maui where you are.
Great informational post Sugar. It sure took a lot of time, patience and paper work to get you to your new home but it sure was worth it wasn’t it!
Glad you explained the trip. We were wondering too about that long trip. But you seemed to have had no problems. Glad you didn’t have to be quaranteed. You sure look happy there Sugar. Have yourselves a super Sunday.
What an interesting post and I am so glad you got first class treatment on the plane rides!
I worry about pets flying because once I saw a gorgeous and frantic golden awaiting for his humans to pick him up at the Seattle Airport. Within minutes they all met up again! Happy Reunions are always best!
Have a wonderful day in paradise!
Sugar this was a very informative post and OMD you had to jump through a lot of hoops and your peeps had to muddle through lots of red tape but in the end WELL WORTH IT to be in paradise.
Hugs from your BFFF,
Madi and by the way you are GORGEOUS
That was SOME trip, Sugar. Oz doesn’t have rabies either, so all animals have to go through a long quarantine. But we’re happy you arrived safely..as if we had any doubts..and have hit those beaches.
XXXOOO Daisy,Bella & Roxy
This sure was interesting! Glad everything went well! And, for some reason, I never knew you were a service dog. I am so impressed!
Lovies, Miss Mindy
I’m glad you got a lei too Sugar. You went through a lot, but now you’re living in your new home with mom and dad. Wonderful.
Have a woof woof day. My best to your mom. 🙂
Having family that moved to HI I was wondering what happened with the quarantine process
Stop on by for a visit

That is incredible! You mom did all the right things to make it as easy as possible. I don’t think I would have handled it as well as you. You got to ride first class?! That is so cool. I have never flown but if I did that’s where I’d want to be, not with the luggage. I know I would not handle that well. Glad you are having a paradise of a time in your new home.
Blessings,
Goose
Wow Sugar! my Mom and Dad flew to Hawaii and that was long enough but for YOU to do it (and first class too!) that is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
xoxoxoxo
I am glad that you did not have to do the quarantine. I thought that was always required. So glad it is not and that everything went smoothly.
