Last Wordless Wednesday I posted this photo and asked if you see a table behind me.
I don’t see a table behind me and many of you agree.
Let me double check.
No Table … There’s no actual table but a SPEED TABLE.
There are 3 versions of Speed Calming Street Measures.
Coming from the mainland, I am only familiar with 2 versions, Speed Bump and Speed Hump.
Here in Hawaii, there are lots of Speed Tables.
Basically Speed Bump, Speed Hump and Speed Table are all related,
differing primarily in the length of the raised portion of the impediment.
What is the difference between Speed Bump, Speed Hump and Speed Table?
A speed bump is typically a thin rounded design.
It is a raised pavement structure usually from two to six inches high.
Speed hump is usually derived from speed bump.
It is designed not to exceed four inches high and are usually from 10 to 12 feet long.
The purpose of the length is to allow the entire vehicle to be on the hump at once before it goes down the far side onto the pavement.
Speed table is essentially derived from speed hump.
It’s about the same height (three to four inches) but longer than speed humps.
Also, it is usually a long flat top and ramps that may be more gently sloped than a speed hump. This gives them the ability to handle vehicles at higher speeds. Typically, a speed table might be 22 feet long with a 10-foot top and six-foot ramps on either end.
Wowie! Hope these information were helpful and educational.
From the main road/hwy to my house everyday we go through 5 Speed Tables.
Speed Tables are typical traffic calming devices upcountry
wherein the roads are curvy, winding and lots of ups and down.
Also, many of you have asked if my new home is behind the white picket fences.
I’ll be sharing soon … thinking to do weekend posts designated about my
new home, basically sharing the island of Maui, HI.
Happy Weekend!

Sugar! It looks absolutely gorgeous where you live now!!! You DO look a little hot though….is it really humid there? The speed table is interesting…we have never heard of that before! Happy Saturday!
xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
That’s very interesting. I had never heard of a speed table before. It sure does look pretty there and it’s great of you to show us around. Have a wonderful day Sugar
Thanks for explaining the table behind you! I have never heard of a speed table before. Interesting stuff!
Hi Y’all,
Stoppin’ to say “hello” and see how y’all are doing. Looks like you’ve met up with “speed crazy”…no that’s not quite right, speed obsessed islanders. 😉 5 speed tables! Yikes!
Those tables though…my Human says they sound better than bumps and humps which play havoc with low slung cars, wheel alignment and suspensions.
Hope you continue having a fantastic weekend! But then who wouldn’t in the wonderful land of Hawaii!
Y’all come by now,

That Maui is silly Sugar

Now you TRICKED us with the SPEED Table thingy. THAT was a GOOOOOOD one Sugar. Can’t wait to see more thingys from your new World. THANKS
I like speed tables better than speed bumps too. I sure think you live in a beautiful place Sugar.
Have a woof woof weekend. My best to your mom. 🙂
Funny name for a speed bump or hump!
But a good idea to prevent speeders and protect our friends walking nearby!
Hugs, Kathy
MOL Sugar…some times the names are so deceiving…you best not try to eat your lunch on that table.
Hugs your BFFF,
Madi
Wow Sugar, I love that you have educated me on the roads in Maui. I have been to Maui many times and have not noticed those, maybe because I haven’t been off the beaten path. I can’t wait to see more of where you live. It’s so beautiful there and Sugar – you certainly fit in so beautifully. Have a great day. Check out my blog today because it’s Meeka’s birthday and I’ve posted many cute pictures of her.
I bet those are fun to go over!! All we have are speed humps here in New Mexico, maybe our new home won’t have any humps, bumps, or tables! Did you hear we are about to move?
We don’t have any speed tables in Arizona, but I bet if we had them here they would call them speed mesas. We have lots of mesas here (which means table in Spanish) and some of them even have roads going up them.
Very educational Sugar, thanks for sharing. :o)
Hi Sugar, I’m wondering if these are fairly new(of course we haven’t been to Maui; I don’t remember seeing them when we were there 8 yrs ago-but like you said maybe they are just upcountry. I haven’t seen any on Kauai and have never seen them here on the Mainland. I think they are a great idea though. We are seeing more and more round-abouts(like they have in New England)here in Colorado to help slow traffic down which is also really needed. I can’t wait to see your home and your new area.
Sending lots of Colorado love to you today.
Aloha, Noreen
Super interesting!
Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!! woo woo woo!
I have never heard of any of this either. Super interesting! Soooo looking forward to seeing your new digs!
We have never heard of speed tables, Sugar. But we think we all need to go on a road trip to Maui to test them out:) BOL
Happy Cinco de Mayo!

We never heard of a speed table before so this was very interesting Sugar! We have something bigger than a speed bump but smaller than a speed hump in our neighborhood so now we wonder what they are called. Hmmm. Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Learn something everyday! Never heard of it, although we have bumps and humps here.
It is fun to learn about Maui! Thanks for sharing! So your mommy cooks all of your meals? We will be using many of your recipes!!

Ruthie
I love learning new things!! Maybe one day my mom can drive me over a speed table! Can’t wait to read about your new house!!

You are just so knowledgeable, Sugar! The only thing I know about ‘table’ is that it’s something I get on when I do agility. I don’t think you can drive over it though….
How neat. We had know idea. Guess that tables that discussion! MOL! Happy weekend, furriends. xoxo
Sugar – you are so observant and wise! Thanks for sharing with us 🙂
I have never heard of a speed table. We could use a few of those around here. 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend.
