One thing I LOVE the most being here in Maui, Hi is the BEACH.
I LOVE to swim, ride the waves and jump into the ocean to retrieve my toy.
I always have a PAWSOME time at the beach.
I’m also fond of the beach sand especially the golden sand on my favorite beach.
Remember when I ate some sand. I remember it well and I learned my lesson. Never Again!
Well, I learned another fun way to enjoy the sand …
Yes, DIGGING!!!
Probably you’ll say its normal as most dogs dig.
I never dug before and just recently discovered the FUN of Digging.
Every time we go to the beach my mom asks me to stop but I could not help it.
DIG! DIG! DIG! She asked, Why Do I DIG?
4 Major Reasons Why Dogs Dig and my rebuttal response …
1) Dogs will often dig out of boredom.
Are you kidding…ME, bored. How can I be bored. I am never bored when I am on the beach.
2) Dogs dig to find relief from the heat.
Mmmmm maybe as deeper layers of sand is cooler.
Yes, I do feel it when I put my face in it but its a temporary relief.
Jumping into the ocean is the best way to cool off.
3) Dogs are toy savers.
Why will I bury my toy in the sand?
Just does not make sense as my toy is my water beach buddy.
4) Digging is often used as a means of escape.
Escape to go WHERE?
Well, let me rephrase it … Digging is often used to SEE …
See The Place WHERE a New Adventure will take place.
It might come to a surprise to many of you but you’ll find out on tomorrow’s post, Jan. 29th.
Lots of Golden L♥VE n Woofs
SUGAR
I’m joining this post to Monday Mischief for being mischievously digging on the beach but I certainly have good intent to WHY?
What about the possibilities of finding little critters? Whatever your reasons are, you look super cute when you are digging!
I love to dig as well. It is just plain fun. MOM has a special spot for me in our yard where I can dig all I want. When I am done she puts the dirt back for when I want to dig some more. And when we are backpacking I dig a little too. This has proved most helpful on some trips as I can make a pretty soft spot for us to sleep. Of course I get to dig in the snow right now, when ever I want.
Blessings,
Gosoe
Mom and I call it digga digga dooooooooooooo. I love to dig too, but mom makes me save it for the beach and NOT for the yard. It took a while, but I finally figured out the difference!
Good exercise? A desire to throw sand everywhere? You’ve spent too much time around terriers? 🙂
Waiting to see why we are digging in the sand:)
Woof from cold northern Germany!
Oh I would love to be there too.
I love to dig in everything…here in snow now. oh and I dig for mousies !
♥woof
Golden Bella
I saw you on Mancat Monday at Jacquelines Cat House
Lee use to dig at our old house, probably from boredom. Now she only digs if she clearly smells something under the ground. Phod is not a digger.
Happy Digging! Lee and Phod
Hi Sugar, Toby here, I once dug up a ghost crab at the beach that way and whoa! you don’t want to see one of those nasty things coming at your nose! So you be careful!
Eager to learn where you are going,
your pal,
Toby
Hey Sugar…should you did your way across the Pacific to NC how about dropping by to say hi!! MOL
I love watching you dig and seeing the sand fly. Great Photos. I dig too but for another reason….MOL
Hugs Madi your BFFF
You Dig Sugar! Sherman’s a digger, but only in mud. I’ve never quite figured out why.
Wow Sugar you just now discovered digging? Mollipop loves to dig in the yard. She is always trying to dig up moles. She’s very good at catching them but then she tries to eat them and thy make her sick. So I have to watch hr closely and make sure to get the poor dead creature before she eats it.
But, on the other hand, our yard and grass is looking much better as she is getting rid of all of the moles!
Happy digging Sugar!
Digging is great!!! I’m working on my tunnel too – maybe we can meet us in the middle?
baby girl is a digger, and none of the 4 reasons fits her. she digs for the sheer joy of it. she has two spots in the yard that sometimes we can see china and i have to fill them in so she can dig them out again. she can throw tons of sand in 30 seconds, but when she is done, she lays down in the hole and surveys her kingdom…
Wow, you are a champion digger, good job.
Sugar, that looks like so much FUN! Woofs from Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie (who are not allowed to dig!)
Hi Sugar! I love to dig too! Right now I am having fun digging in the snow. I wish I had a beach near me to dig in too.
Oh oh Sugar – you had better be careful – you might dig right through the island and cause it to sink – either that or you’ll end up down under!
We love digging in the sand too. My Lily digs a hole then does pee pee in it. Nutty
Have a fun day
Benny & Lily
You’re making grreat progress on that hole to China!
DIGGING is a PURE JOY!! We have never met a hole that didn’t NEED DIGGING. It is so… LIBERATING!!!
I have never tried this “digging” thing….looks like fun….I may have to give it a try….
Digging is great exercise too. I like it and our Little Bit likes to dig now and then.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. My best to your mom. 🙂
Don’t they get it we dig because we can. It is just plain fun. Do you see them questioning all those kids with pails at the beach?
Our backyard has sand too and, yes, we dig in it. Mom doesn’t get too mad though because sand doesn’t leave dirt marks on the carpet. Just a visit from Count Vacula and it’s all gone!
When you find the answer let me know, my yard has had it’s fill of holes!
I am not a big digger but now Addi, that is a different story. She would right there with ya Sugar!!!
Maybe you want to go to China??
Happy Diggin!!

Jazzi and Addi
Sam learned the fine points of digging from Avalon yesterday. I’m not sure he will try it on his own, but he definitely had fun.
Sam
Hmmm, no of those reasons quite fit our situation..,,
I think our boy, Ryder, digs because he likes the way the damp earth feels under his toes! Lol
Happy Digging is just a way of life around here. Dig ON, Sugar!!
Who couldn’t resist a good dig. We do it because it’s FUN!! But I can’t wait till tomorrow’s post to find out.
I love to dig in the snow. We got plenty today : https://www.dawsondogs.com/blog/2013/1/Our-First-Snow-Day
This is so cute! You made great progress.
Wow, you’re really digging away there! Boomer and Dottie aren’t diggers which is probably a good thing or we’d have some serious holes in our yard.
I’m not much of a digger, butts once in a while…..wooooooooo! It sure can be fun! You look like you are having the time of your life!!
Kisses,
Ruby
When we lived on the North Sea, I used to dig a lot on the beach. I was quite young, but I loved to bury my big Kuvasz sister or my mom. Neither appreciated it, but I loved doing it!
How intense you are Sugar, when you dig. Your eyes are focused on the sand and your ears are flying thru the air. I don’t think I have ever seen you so “intense”
Love
Bert
Hey Sugar! I look forward to learning the answer tomorrow!
We dig cuz it’s fun!
Keep Calm & Bark On!
Murphy & Stanley
My Lab Murphy used to dig the same kind of trenches on the beach Sugar…the sand would just fly back from her paws…and she seemed to be having a great deal of fun…since the waves just smooth it over I never thought it bad…just a temporary disturbance
That sand looks like it is mighty fine to dig in Sugar! Do we need a reason to dig? lol
the brown dawgs
I dig to find mice and rabbits… I have never caught one and would not know what to do if I did, but I love to dig at their little holes and stuff my golden nose in the holes and sniff long and hard at those micey or rabbitty smells. I also dig in the snow, so that bit about the heat, well that dog has clearly never found a discarded lunchbox sandwich in a pile of snow BOL. … I will NEVER learn
I love to dog too, I don’t think its a boredom thing, I think it’s just fun:-) Plus you never know what you’ll find!
I dig too, Sugar, but it’s usually to China. I can’t wait to find out where you are going!
I like to dig in the sand too, Sugar! Which is funny because don’t dig anywhere else…
My take, it smells WONDERFUL, surely there’s something in there! 🙂
Sugar, I think dogs dig because it is FUN! Don’t need any other reason!
OK, I had to go back and see your digging posts, Sugar, and can’t wait to get to the next installment. I did because I’m bored? It’s there? Or maybe it’s just a spring thing. I don’t know, but it’s so fulfilling, don’t you think?
