Big Red Foot In The City

March 7, 2013

I pass this Big Red Foot every time I go for a walk in the city.
Believe it or not is it located on the front steps of a church entrance,  St. James Cathedral
Based on our research, it was created by Mary Seyfarth, a Chicago sculptor.

It is red and made of cast iron and plate steel.
It is sure interesting …
Why is it so big and red? What’s the significance of the it being next to a church?
It’s barefoot but the heal shows a print of a shoe.
We have lots of questions about this sculpture but unable to find the answers.

All we can share with you is that its a beautiful arts. There are many talented local artist here in Chicago. One way to get known is to have a standout creation. Mary Seyfarth surely did create something that is eye catching and reflects an attitude. She was inspired when she visited Greece and worked at Synaxis.  I can tell you that I witnessed many visitors of the city (even the locals) take photos with this Big Red Foot. Their photos were very creative and quite amusing.

So I did a test by standing on the footsteps and standing in front of big red foot …
Golden Funny! Many took photos of me with the foot.
I am a dog, I definitely sniffed the big red foot. It’s clean and no smell at all, just dirt.

Besides being on front footsteps of the church, it is also next to the church’s garden gate.
Most likely the reason for its location.
Mary Seyfarth called her work Garden Foot which honors those who love to walk in nature.

The Big Red Foot definitely creates various curiosity and interesting talks among the visitors of the City of Chicago. If you plan to visit the City of Chicago, make sure to check the
Big Red Foot at St James Cathedral (65 East Huron St).

now i am wondering why… it sure is a great conversation piece, but why in front of a church? i bet there is a reason.. of course people took photos of you with the shoe, you are more beautiful than the foot. i wonder how many dogs, NOT YOU, think it is an odd shaped fire hydrant.

    Morning Sugar!!
OMDs that is one gigantic set of feet. Can you imagine the foot print. Chicago has some very pretty outside art…mom and I still like the one of you w Marilyn Monroe.

Oh my mom loves coffee too and it has to be hot. What a great idea to reuse the snuggies.
    Grape juice can:
MOM IS HANGING HER HEAD IN SHAME…SHE IS NOT VERY GOOD A MAKING BISCUITS…SHE WISHES SHE WAS BUT SHE IS EXCELLENT AT MAKING SOUTHERN CORNBREAD. She keeps hoping the can will inspire her.
Grandma Margie bought and used 5 lbs of flour a week. Dad said she made biscuits every night at supper.

Is does seem off – I could see the significance of it being related to the garden – wearing work boots and then leaving them by the door and coming inside barefoot – but why it is red and why by the church – tis a puzzle ?
