Pukka (pronounced puck-uh) a labrador retriever is the inspiration of Ted Kerasote latest book Pukka’s Promise. Kerasote is also known for his book, Merle’s Door.
For sure you wish your dog would live longer.
For those of you that lost a dog, most likely you’ve wonder if only they lived longer…?
This is what Kerasote covered in his book.
He did intense research on what makes a dog live happy, healthy and longer.
He pointed out the importance of spaying and neutering. Does it help or hinder a dog’s longevity? Also, with the many dog food and treat recalls. Kerasote spent an enormous time researching dog food and diet. Do you ever wonder what really goes on at the dog food manufacturing facility? Interesting chapters in Kerasote’s book is about breeding/genetics and purebreds vs shelter dogs. Kerasote made a choice and got Pukka from a breeder.
Kerasote and Pukka experience a great everyday life, as they live in Wyoming with acres of land. Pukka is leash free and in an all day play environment.
Basically, Pukka and Kerasote are together all the time.
I can totally relate to this as I experience this kind of living last year (when I lived in HI). Being able to be off leash and have an open environment for outdoor activities was paw some. I celebrated my 11th barkday in paradise and my experienced surely added extra years to my life. It made us really think that environment truly plays an important role in a dog’s longevity.
Kerasote’s Pukka’s Promise is a wonderful read. His mission is every dog owner’s wish.
The information Kerasote shared in his book is meticulously researched
and thus Pukka’s Promise is an excellent reference guidebook.

What an excellent book! We’re sure the same goes for us kittehz..
Pee Ess – we didn’t know you had a shop! We’ll hop over there. Happy Thursday! XOXO
A wonderful book indeed. I should try and get it soon 🙂
I am the lucky few who can/have the time to be with my dog 24/7. We can give our dogs/kittehs the life that they so deserve.. with some sacrifices here and there.
Sugar is also one of the lucky few who have the life she deserves. She’s a darling.
This is a wonderful read and I thank you for the opportunity to win it, but I just finished reading it and need to write my review.
This book sounds fabulous and we would love to be entered in your give-away, Sugar!
Love ya lots,
Mitch and Molly
I have a good life with Karen and Gerard, even though I don’t get much time off leash outside and they both leave me alone with the cats when they go to work five days a week. I am now 8 years old and look forward to many more happy years with them!
That sure sounds like a great book. And well worth the time to read. And I am convinced that one of the secrets to my longevity is the awesome off leash time I get to have and also getting to be with my MOM so much.
Blessings,
Goose
This sounds like a great book! And of course we’d love to live longer so any information in there would be helpful. We’d be very happy and honored to participate.
I just said to Squirrel Queen yesterday that I wish dogs lived as long as cats, my friends had cats for 22 years. our dog Max was 16 which is really old, Baby is 12 and we are hoping she makes it to Maxes age.
Sounds like a brilliant read Sugar. We are in the UK so no worries if you wish to exclude us. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
That is one thing I have been really lucky with – all my dogs have lived to be between 16 and 20 years of age with 1 exception. My last sheltie was 18 years old – and considering her age lived a very healthy happy life. I guess I have stuck to small-medium breeds for this reason though – I HATE loosing my furbabies so I tend to pick a breed that has longevity. I have only had one large breed dog and he passed away at age 4 with bone cancer in the leg that spread. Since then the ‘little guys’ do me just fine
That sounds like a very good book. Our mom only reads mysteries and stuffs like that.
Yes, please on the giveaway. I would love to read this book.
Sounds like a great book. We agree with the off leash free living. In Germany we were always racing around with friends off leash and just being dogs and doing what dogs do. Here in the US, people don’t let their dogs be dogs, no sniffing, no off leash play, it is rather sad. We have a small group of friends that we hang with that agree with our philosophy, but it probably does help us live longer if we can be the dogs we were made to be!
Hey Sugar!
Wow, my Mom liked Merle’s Door and I sure wish I could run free like that. Butt, too many bears in my territory and I’d get myself into all sorts of trouble. Mom makes me homemade food to keep me healthy. I’ll get your Giveaway added to the BCCalendar too!
Grr and Woof,
Sarge, COP
We have to take very good care of our four legged family members. We sure do here.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. 🙂
Oh wow, Sugar that sounds interesting – every doggy should read it ;o)
Hi Sugar…thank you for the excellent review!! It sounds like a wonderful book. Mom tries to read all books about animals and would love to read this one; however, since this one has so much helpful information for dog owners we will NOT put our name in the drawing for the free copy
Hugs and a lot of luck to all the pups wanting to win

I’m definitely interested in entering the giveaway. We lost both our dogs to cancer so I’m hoping to keep Rita around for a good long time!
I love being off my lead, nearly all the dogs in our village are off the lead so it makes for a mega dogfest if we bump into each other on our walks. There are some Shibu Inus who are on the lead but no one dares sniff at them nor their Mum 😉 I pity Emma not being here in Germany any more, off lead is pawsome BOL!
Of course this would be a sure book to want to win. Sounds good
Snorts,
Benny & Lily
This book sounds great! Mom lost her first pup, Peach, to a very bad kind of cancer when Peach was only 5 years old 🙁 No one is even sure what causes this kind of cancer, but I know mom is determined to do everything she can to make sure I’m as healthy and happy as possible. We would love to be in the giveaway and I have a feeling she will be reading this book soon whether we win or not 🙂
PS: We didn’t know about your shop page on FB! I just liked it 🙂
I would LOVE to be entered into the give-away. I am one of the few that actually READS the give-away rules….lol
Mom says she was lucky ’cause her two little dogs each lived almost 20 years. Sure sounds like a good book for the doggy people. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at thecatonmyhead, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
That does sound like a good book and one that every fur parent should read
This post made our mommy all leaky.
I miss Sugar, we sure do want to be in the contest. I am one of the lucky ones who gets to spend time off lead about 95% of the time. I only have to wear a leash when I am doing therapy work and I don’t really mind that.
Love
Bert
Hi Sugar, we would love to participate in the giveaway for the book. Mom has read Merles Door twice! She would love to have a copy of Pukka’s Promise. She thinks that we should all live good long lives.
Unfortunately we are not on FB for the extra 10.
hugs
Bailey, Hazel & Greta
Enter us! We enjoyed Merle’s Door. BTW, we got our vests and the patches came too. Our photos will post at 2:00pm tomorrow!

Sure, I’d love to win this book…gotta keep Max around FOREVER!!!
I finished reading Pukka’s Promise this week and LOVED it. Kerasote is so evenhanded, down-to-earth, and thorough in his research. I’m thinking of giving a copy to my vet. Changes the book prompts me to make – discuss annual vaccinations with vet (can we titer blood instead?) – look at adding more veggies, less grain in diet, kibble –
and consider volunteering to walk dogs at a shelter (not sure my heart can bear it)
The winner of your giveaway is a lucky reader!
We just got our copy in the mail and can’t wait to read it!
Sam
Hubby and I talk about this often. I get so sad at times. I want my pups forever. 🙂
I would love to have this book!
Thanks for giveaway, Sugar!
A cousin of mine just mentioned this book so it is very coincidental that you have written about it. Since Dolly is my first dog I of course want her to be with me as long as possible. Looking forward to reading the book so I am entering your contest. Sandra and Dolly
We recently reviewed the book and did a giveaway too, so this one is for someone else to win & enjoy!
Sugar, Taylor and I would LOVE to take part in your giveaway for “Pukka’s Promise”! It sounds like a fabulous book that every dog parent should read! Also, I had no idea you had an online doggy shop!! Can’t wait to check out your gear! ! 🙂
This book sounds wonderful. I can’t wait to get my hands on it and read it. I lost my wonderful friend Zia a couple years ago. It was a terrible day indeed.
I am entering this giveaway. I am looking forward to getting my hands on this book and reading it cover to cover. A couple years ago I lost my friend Zia to a terrible accident. I often think of him and the short time we had together. Our little pups make our hearts grow huge. When they leave this world they take a piece of our hearts with them.
I’m almost finished reading Pukka’s Promise and recommend the book to anyone interested in keeping our dogs and cats healthier for longer…There’s a lot of excellent information and the author has done a huge amount of research …I don’t agree with everything he says, but he’s gonna make you think
Sugar you are Golden! I am entering the giveaway. Your review is enticing and would love to read it.
