Do you enjoy gardening? Do you include your dog when gardening?
Many of you know that my mom loves to cook (wannabe Rachel Ray).
Well, mom also enjoys gardening (wannabe Martha Stewart). We have a gardener, Mr. Mark and his crew, but there are certain yard work needed to be handled by us. Yes, I am part of my mom’s crew, Golden Woofs Landscaping.
For many, it can be challenging to have their dog while gardening.
Use your best judgement. I’m lucky that I started at a young age helping mom gardening.
Why include your dog while gardening?
1) Training opportunity for your dog to get familiarized with yard/garden.
Your dog needs to know yard limits, which part of the garden safe and off limits.
2) Helps reduce your dog’s curiosity.
When gardening with your dog, keep in mind these 4 safety tips.
1) Create comfort zones where your pet can rest (sit/lay down) and watch you.
2) Place gardening tools particularly sharp ones in a safe area or container. A gardening tool can be mistaken as a toy.
3) There are lots of pretty flowers/plants but some of them can be dangerous to your dog. The ASPCA has an entire list of plants to avoid. Let your dog sniff the flowers/plants in your garden.
4) Ground mulch provides beauty in your garden but some can be dangerous to your dogs. One example is Cocoa Mulch which I have ingested when I was a young pup. Wisely choose the proper mulch. We use a fine mulch that is almost looks like a soil.
Always remember, Have FUN! Enjoy your garden with your dog.
Don’t be upset if your dog digs a hole, knocks over a pot and/or kills a plant. It happens.
Plants grows back and can be replaced but keep in mind the bond you created with your dog is irreplaceable and more rewarding.

I wish I were a gardener, but I’m not. I’m going to try a little harder this year to keep things neat and tidy though.
I help my mom garden in the strawberry patch. I am the best helper there is.

By the looks of you Rachel Ray and mom, Martha Stewart, you will have one awesome yard, BOL

Are those Golden Tomato Plants we see in that last pic? You really are an adept gardener, Sugar!
Sugar, we think she should turn the digging over to you.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Great post! I wrote a post about creating a cats garden (follow my link), but now I know you can include your dog, too!
Come on, Sugar! I would think you know better than to ask me this question. I would eat all of the dirt/flowers/whatever else the minute papa and mama looked away.
Looks like you have the gardening work well in control….dogervising is so important!
I love gardening with my MOM. And those are great tips. The best part, well there are many, but I do love when the veggies come on. yum yum
Blessings,
Goose
We love helping out in the garden.
Jake is great at gardening, he knocks over decorations, tramples on plants, eats grass, baby digs holes to china and lays in them. you are such a good dog to help your mommy
Sugar, you look right at home in the garden and are being such a good girl. We can tell that your mom trained you well for this outdoor activity. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at The Cat on My Head, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
We totally AGREE… gardening is GRRREAT fun.
Sugar, you’re such a good girl!! Your 2 lookalikes here — Callie & Shadow — were holy terrors in the yard when they were young dogs. Their Dad and I gave up trying to have a garden in the back yard. Of course, it was our own fault for just letting them have the run of the yard during the day back then. If I had it to do over, they would spend their days at daycare; but I don’t so we move on. Enjoy your garden, sweet Sugar!
Looks like fun – pawsome little boots you have! My human always gets upset when I try and do some gardening, apparently I don’t always dig in the right place *Waggy tail*
We love to help in the garden too! Especially when they turn on the hose and we get to drink from it! BOL!
I’m not really welcome when they work in the garden. I have no idea why… Have a funny day in your garden Sugar
Oh I love gardening, sadly, I won’t be doing much this year. I’m about as big as a whale now with this baby and can barely bend over to touch my toes hehe.
I never thought of using gardening as a training exercise before, what a great idea! I’ll keep it in mind for next year when I plan to transform our new yard hehe.
We have the yard but no garden, just flowers in pots which I always help plant. I also like to supervise the mowing and chase after that nasty weed wacker. We had to replace the mulch with rock because mom hated having to put down new mulch every year and I liked to eat it, but rocks solved that issue. Happy gardening with your mom 🙂
Just try and stop me from helping in the garden!! My job is to carry the tarp. That’s where we put all the weeds and trimmings. I am also there to give kisses every time my people bend over. It makes them giggle!!

When we had our house, the dogs loved to garden with me. They really liked eating the fresh peas.
What a great helper you are Sugar! Mom thinks she has dog proofed our backyard haha. Love Dolly
Great tips! We’re also careful not to use any kind of chemicals in the garden. And be sure to protect the mama with protective eyewear and gloves and respirator and hearing protection where necessary! 🙂
Your pals,
Diane and Rocco
wish I had a yard to put these suggestions to work!
Our Little Bit always goes with daddy when there is gardening to do. She follows him everywhere. Bless her heart. She’s daddy’s girl.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. My best to your mom. 🙂
Sugar, our mommy could use your help! You’re such a good girl!
I love’z helping Dad in the garden, I nick the ball string that he ties the plants up with.. xx00xx
Mollie and Alfie
Interesting. In twenty years, gardening with the dogs has never been an issue. They just hang out while we work. Gardening with the chickens is a whole other deal. Gah!
We help with the gardening and when we do our name is ‘GET OFF THE FLOWER BED’. I know my peeps appreciate all that I do. Have a terrific Thursday. Sugar.
Best wishes Molly
Me and Tui love to help Mommy garden. I pull her Garden Wagon sometimes. ~Fenris
Great idea for sure! I’m not much of a gardener, hate them bugs! 😉
I’m not much of a gardener. 🙂 But I would love to hire Golden Woofs Landscaping. Seriously though, Sampson is a good boy and will lie outside while we work. Delilah? Not so much.
Golden woofs to you, Sugar!
I’m not much of a gardener, but I do love to go on the annual Garden Tour. Now that I think about it, that should be coming up here pretty quick!
Oh, this gardening looks like fun, Sugar! We haven’t got a garden really, just a patio with a mini lemon tree and some jasmine. But maybe one day… 🙂
Gizmo is always outside with me when I work in the garden. He loves to watch what I’m doing. I’ve been careful about what’s been planted and only use cypress mulch or the readily available Spanish moss. The only mischief he’s gotten into is burrowing himself a nest in the freshly laid mulch to get down to the cool damp earth beneath…lucky for me he doesn’t try eating it
Excellent post. I am happy to help anyone who needs holes dug.
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Wonderful helpful tips Sugar! You are a natural 🙂
Yeah, Ma doesn’t like MY way of gardening!!!! BOL Just in case you haven’t noticed, all Ma’s plants are in Jail….she doesn’t like me ‘sampling’ them (even thou none of them are dangerous, she STILL says no…pffffft!)
Meanie…
Kisses,
Ruby
I love helping in the garden. When they need a break from working, I ask them to play with me.
Great gardening post. You are such a good helper Sugar and look good doing it. I like to garden also and my dogs help me out by laying in the flower garden and grabbing the weeds when I throw them out of the garden and shred them.
How fun! I wish mommy still had a green thumb!
Licks,
Ruthie
Duke does try to water the garden for us but I prefer he let me take care of that
Sugar OMDs your winter boots make the purrfect gardening gloves!!!
You are just so stylish
Hugs your bFFF

You make gardening with your dog sounds like fun. now, I just need to move from my apartment and get a garden. Or, I can bring in soil and turn my living room into a garden. i have a feeling my landlord won’t like that.
Nice tips Sugar! My family owns a gardening business so we love to garden. I’ve seen a dog actually eat a TON of mulch wood chips before… was not good!
I love the photos!
Great post! The pack always helps with yard work, except cutting the grass – everybody stays inside, no exceptions.
