For the past weeks, I’ve heard lots of unusual noises.
First, we had so much rain with thunder and lots of Boom Boom noises.
Secondly, many men have invaded my backyard and lots of heavy equipment made loud noises.
I am not very happy. My backyard time has been limited and loud noises have disturbed my Golden peaceful naps.
What does my mom do to make me feel good?
1) Making sure I am in a Safe Place in the house. When I hear unusual noises, I like being upstairs and under the office table. Since I am free to roam around the house, mom encourages me that it is okay to be on my bed where I can lie on my favorite blankie.
2) Even though all the doors and windows are closed I can still hear noises. Mom plays calming MUSIC such as instrumental/ classical. Sometimes, she leaves the TV on.
3) Mom provides me a special banana Kong treat in which serves as a DISTRACTION for a couple minutes.
4) Mom lights up calming Scented Candles/Oils. She uses a Lavender scent. It surely calms me down and puts me to sleep.
5) Nothing beats the magic of TOUCH. Lots of Caressing from mom are the best.
4th of July celebration is this Thursday. The above methods my mom used to make me feel good can definitely be used if your dog fears the sounds of 4th of July celebration.
Lots of Golden L♥VE n Woofs
SUGAR
Your mom is very caring, to do all that for you. 🙂
We think your mama love you very, very much and would do anything to make sure that you were nice and calm Sugar!! Chloe will be ok during the celebrations for the most part, but LadyBug is another story…we are still trying to decide whether we should get her a ThunderShirt just to try??? xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
We usually just bark at loud noises, like today, when a VERY loud jet went over out house. We only have propeller planes in our area so we barked and ran inside until it was gone.
Your mum has some great ideas to make you feel safe.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Great tips, Sugar. We do those same things during thunderstorms and fireworks. Really helps!
Your mom doesn’t want you to be scared. She is doing wonderful things so you won’t be frightened.
Your mom is just the best. ALWAYS caring for you in such loving ways. All doggies should be so blessed.
Blessings,
Goose
Parker is not fond of thunder, so I’m sure he won’t be happy with the fireworks this week. The air conditioner or fan is helpful to drown out the noise.
Great post!
You are a very lucky girl to have such a wonderful Mom.
Boy your mom sure takes good care of you! We’ll have to keep our windows closed and the TV on loud to drown out all of the illegal boom booms. Imagine if it was legal? Love Dolly
When I hear loud noises I’m always there – or in my wardrobe :o) Have a golden monday Sugar!
I get frightened a lot too. Thanks for those tips. Lee (and brave Phod)
great advice Sugar! I use the distraction method too, either with play or with a treat and I often massage Dakota by his neck and ears. It helps at least a little bit!
Stay safe Sugar and the booms booms will be over soon. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
My sister spends lots of time hiding in the upstairs bathroom this time of year, but during the day it is pretty quiet. Noises don’t bother me at all, so I am fine and still getting my beauty rest 🙂 I think that petting and snuggling is the most helpful, though anytime that I am scared! Hope you have a quiet day!
Oh Sugar, you are very well prepared for the noises of the July month. They started last weekend here too. On these nights My Vickie and I dont get to sleep until after midnight as we must be up and in the kennels to make sure everyone else is comfrotable and safe. Most of my friends are pretty un disterbed by the noises but some are really scared adn we have to sit with them and hold them and play with them to distract them from the noise.
Happy Hollidays
Bert
We hope those loud noises are gone soon! I am dreading Thursday night’s fireworks…have Riley some calming pills and some herbal “calming tea” to use. Plus, will give her access to the bathroom where she likes to hide in the corner.
Good tips! I may try playing some music for her.
Sugar, you’re a very lucky Golden Girl to have a Mom who loves you so much! As much as I love Callie, Shadow and Ducky! I recently purchased a thundershirt for Callie (my training mentor, Julie, sells them). Ducky wears one when I pick her up at daycare to relieve her anxiety about strangers, and it really helps. It’s taking a little more time to help Callie, but I’m hoping it will eventually help. Since we don’t have thunderstorms every day, it’s hard. For some dogs it works immediately, for some it takes time, and for some it doesn’t work at all. But it’s certainly worth trying…you never know if something will work unless you do try. Have a tail-wagging day, Sugar — and your Mom too!
We don’t like scary noises. Mom blasts the TV real loud
Snorts,
Benny & Lily
I am a firm believer in giving “safe spots”! Titan has several throughout our home that gives him comforts in the event of LOUD noises or storms while Momma is away. There have been times that I’ve left the tv on as well to help drown out the sound of thunder or storms.
Glad you’re able to keep Sugar somewhat comfy during stressful times.
Hi sugar
I am not a fan of noise either…especially thunder. Ironically we have a noise post set for tomorrow
Hugs
Madi
Great tips, Sugar. For most of the Nomad dogs, their crates in the back of the house and beds in the front of the house are safe places they go when they need it. One dog, though, chooses my lap everytime (and I bet youcan guess which one!) Stay safe and comfy because there are surely more loud noises to come!
Wish all pups were taken care of as good as you are, Sugar. Your mom loves you very much! We get fireworks evry night in the summer (we are not too far from SeaWorld) so luckily Rita is used to the noise. She should do fine on 7/4. (I hope!)
Mom hadn’t thought to give me a Kong to distract me from loud noises, I think we’ll try that this July 4th. Thanks!
Good tips! Me and Stanley are OK with the noises of the 4th of July. Mom hopes we stay that way!

Murphy & Stanley

I’m with the gurls from Down Under….I bark and bark! I gotta try and scare the noises away, right? BOL
So glads your Moms knows how to calm you down Sugar!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Sugar you are a lucky girl to have a mom who knows how to take such good care of you
We’re glad your mom has all those ways to calm you during the loud noise. The noise doesn’t bother Isabella but it does me so I hide in the closet no matter what she tries to do. I hate this time of year!
Purrs,
Angel
Awww, you have a great mom! But of course, you deserve her.
It’s been a thunderboomer summer here too Sugar…I don’t like them much but since there’s nothing I can do about it I just go in my quiet place under the table and wait it out…Biggest problem is when I have to do my business and it’s still loud and raining outside…You stay safe and calm sweet Sugar
Hi, Sugar!
I love your post! You gave great advice for the Fourth of July! I hope everyone stays safe 🙂
I nominated you for some awards! You can claim them at https://fourpaws0504.blogspot.com/2013/07/my-very-first-awards.html.
Have a great day!
Our pups don’t like loud noises either. Your mom has some good suggestions. 🙂
What’s going on in your backyard??? Are you getting a swimming pool? 🙂
Your mom is so sweet to think of such wonderful idea to make you feel good. I love the picture of you laying on the couch.
Sounds like you’re in great hands! 🙂
Great tips Sugar…just in time for the 4th.
Yah I dont like the loud noises either and Mom stays with me that night!!

Those are some very nice tips Sugar. I hope you’re able to get some rest in soon. It’s no fun when you’re trying to sleep with all those loud noises going on.
Hope the loud noises ease up for you soon! I’m sure your list helps quite a bit!
Sugar, nice post! I hope you can get some much needed rest and ZZZ’s soon! This is great material for fireworks and thunderstorms as well. I recently posted a blog post on the issue as well, very important for all dogs and their humans!
This is great advise! The holistic vet Taylor goes to uses calming scented candles. Taylor never shows any symptoms of anxiety whenever we go there! Such a simple tool with amazing results!
Last night it stormed here and Miss Nike went into her daddy’s office (where he was working far too late, if you ask us), and she crawled underneath his desk and laid her head on his feet. She can’t get close enough to her people when she’s scared like that.
Thanks again for the tip about the candles and oil. I may have to give it a try!
Be safe, and have a great holiday! <3
Great tips. I love the photo of you asleep on the couch! That is priceless. Happy fourth of July!
I so understand Sugar. We are back from the island and back in our slip. The Hilton fireworks are way too close to the island tonight and Little Bit gets scared of all the noise they make. It’s quiet here and she’s safe.
Have a woof woof day and a happy independence day. My best to your mom. 🙂
Hi Sugar!
Your Mommy sounds like my Mommy, in that she takes such great care of you, making sure you are comforted and feel safe. Mommy does that for me all the time, no matter what. I LOVED the sweet and beautiful photo montage she made of you for this post. You are very beautiful. I’d love to have you visit my blog to read my Independence Day post. I really “get into character” for it.
Sending lots of love your way…Pixel
Oh the banana kong treat sounds like just the thing to make a pup feel better!
