This year, September 22 officially marked the transition from summer into fall. However, just because the temperature begins to drop doesn’t mean that our activity level should as well. Sports, holidays and crisp, cool weather perfect for outside time make this a great season to have some fun – especially with a four-legged friend! To give you some ideas, our friends from Best Elk Antlers has compiled the following list of autumn activities that fur kids and their parents can enjoy together:
Get In The Game: For many people, fall is mainly about one thing – football! Between couch sessions of watching your favorite teams, get up and play your own game! Grab a football, or other ball or toy, and head outside for a one-on-one with your canine companion. Fall is a great time to get some fresh air, and your dog is sure to appreciate the attention and exercise. Got friends with dogs? If you think they’ll get along, consider making game day into a doggy playdate as well!
Play Dress Up: The upcoming months bring Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. A fun way to celebrate the holidays and say hey to friends and family are through personalized greeting cards. From costumes in October to festive sweaters in December, dress up with your pup and take some pics! Whether you get them done at a studio or DIY them at home, everyone is sure to love the super cute outcome!
Go Outside: With scorching summer temperatures a thing of the past, fall is the perfect time to go outside! Grab a leash and some baggies and go for a walk in the neighborhood or get in some play time at the local dog park. Another fun idea? Pile up all the leaves in your yard and jump right in! Cool walks on the beach can also make for nice outside time with your pup, as they’re a lot less crowded in the off-season. For a fun and safe time outside, make sure your dog is up to date on vaccines, consider applying a pet-safe topical repellent against pests, and always do a post-activity body check for cuts, bites or other irritations.
Get Active: Even though the temperatures are cooling down and the days are getting shorter, staying physically active is important for both parents and fur-babies. With a little research, it shouldn’t be too hard to find local pet-friendly hiking trails and/or campsites where you and your four-legged friend can work up a little sweat while catching up with Mother Nature. Bonus: hiking trails in the fall will be especially pretty as the leaves begin to change!
Attend A Festival or Parade: Many towns take advantage of the beautiful fall weather by hosting parades, festivals, fairs and other outdoor gatherings. Check local publications or do a quick internet search and see what autumn happenings are going on in your area. Once you’ve found a few options, grab your leash and baggies and hit the town with your pup to take in all the fun activities and seasonal sights and smells!

HIKING. MOM and I think that is the best Autumn activity. The cooler weather is perfect and the beautiful colors of the changing seasons….well it does not b=get much better than that.
Blessings,
Goose
Oh what great ideas Sugar! When I was younger, summer was always my favorite season. But now, I’m thinking I like fall and spring the best.
We’ll also have to say hiking; we don’t get hot and humid, we can walk further, the trees and leaves are getting prettier. Really there is no downside! However, to shake it up a bit we will check out the Internet for local festivals we can go to.
Dina and Mom
It’s getting hotter here, so our activitiy is slowing down…BOL!
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
We are well into the squirrel hunting season Sugar so we are pretty active. Have a marvellous Monday.

All great ideas! No squirrels here, but bunny chasing is pretty much fun!
HIKING Goose you have the grand prize answer!!!
🙁 But we are sad because my daddy had knee surgery and can’t go more than a couple of blocks yet. We are hoping with paws crossed to get 1 camping trip this autumn – maybe…
those are some great ideas Sugar! I am going to go to our Cider Mill! WOOF! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
We just took Duke apple picking with us! Wasn’t too difficult to find a dog friendly spot. He had so much fun meeting the other dogs there & chasing after the fallen apples!
WE love to PLAY in the LEAVES… AND did holes, of course. BUTT we dig in the Spring and Summer, too.
OOPS…. sorry that should have said DIG holes….. butt we DID DIG yesterday. hehehehehe
We love fall hiking. The cooler weather, the beautiful colors, nothing better.
You even have all the perfect photos to go with each activity! Great!
I just emailed in a nice photo of my girls Lola and Lucy at a pumpkin patch – another great thing to do with your dogs : )
Those are some great suggestions. Out doggie does have a lot more energy since it has cooled off some. So she is a lot more active. Have yourselves a great day.
Little Bit says all these are great things to do except for playing dress up. She refuses to do that.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. My best to your mom. 🙂
Great idea’s Sugar, we love to dress up too 🙂 xxooxx
Mollie and Alfie
My favorite activities in fall are long walks. With leave-catching-competitions, hide and seek and if I get the chance: a mud bath :o)
I’m in the same boat as Amy and Toby. Mom’s hip is still hurting. It’s bursitis and she can’t walk too far. I hope it gets before the really cold weather.
Love Fall! I get lots more active and playful in the cooler weather! Love Dolly
Those are some great ideas! I just like wandering in my yard, since it’s not too hot.
We are looking forward to getting back into hiking with Rita! She doesn’t do well when it’s super hot, so we’ll be glad when the temps start to drop some more (it’s actually still pretty hot here!).
We just spend much more time outside with the nice temperatures. We are looking for pumpkin patch to visit. The one we went to last year is gone, so we have to find another one.
We love doing zoomies in our very large back yard. Just take a look at our video we posted today.
Sugar, great post with lots of great things to do now that Fall is here! We love to be outdoors once the Summer heat is gone – hiking, canoeing, camping, going for big walks or to the park…Oh! There is so much to do!

Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Great ideas! There are a lot of festivals in our area this time of year. Maya is having a great time. She surprised me on the last event we went to. I had a table of stuff at the event so I had to walk back and forth from my car with boxes of stuff. Maya went too and she didn’t once pull me. She’s usually so excited that she wants to run around and say hit to everyone she sees.
All wonderful ideas! We love Fall!
Your pal, Pip
Fall is not the dogdad’s favorite season because he has BAD fall allergies. But it’s MY favorite season, and these are all excellent ideas to get out and enjoy autumn with our dogs.
Those are all great ideas Sugar. Thanks for giving us fun things to do this fall
we are definitely going to make the most of the cooler weather
Wonderful article! 🙂 Fall is my favorite season so I try to spend as much time outside as I can! I love taking Nailah for walks when it’s nice and cool out.
Oh, those are FABulous thingies to do Sugar!!! Well, I’m not too into the costume thingies, butts I do tolerate headbands, and I do gets extra treaties to endure the torture, so….
Luckily we live where the weather isn’t too nasty most of the times, so walkies are never denied, butts they can be cut short, so your suggestions are gonna be noted to Ma!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Maggie walks twice as fast in the fall – she turns in to a 2 year old!!! Also loves jumping in the leaves or just laying in the backyard scratching her back on the nice cool grass!
Perfect! So much fall fun to be had!
Brown dawgs say that Autumn is the best season because it is hunting season! They wait all year…
What a great post! Fall is Mama’s favorite time of the year, and ours too!

You don’t have to give Momma any extra reasons. As soon as fall weather hits, we’re going out LOTS more often, and for lots longer. It’s the best time of the year!
Awww Sugar. I just love your face. I also love this post because for some reason I never thought of taking my dog to parades!!!!
