Many of you know that I Golden LOVE Bananas.
We always have bananas. Our local grocery stores know my mom as the “Banana Lady”. Our friend Lulu’s mom Christie from Life with Beagle asked us “How ripe should the bananas be, before you give them to a dog?” In my household, we eat bananas everyday and we take our bananas ripeness seriously.
How to tell if a banana is ripe?
1) COLOR
a) If the banana is solid green then its not ripe. Green bananas will turn yellow just leaving it on the kitchen counter/table. Never ripen bananas in the refrigerator, it will turn bad instead of ripening.
b) A yellow banana is a ripe banana.
c) A Banana with brown spots and/or turning brown is a very ripe banana.
Did you know?
A green banana is mostly starch. As a green banana becomes a yellow banana, the starch converts into sugar. The brown-ier a yellow banana turns, the more it taste sweeter. Browning bananas are great to freeze and use for Banana Ice Cream.
2) Feel
a) A green banana is very hard to the touch.
b) A yellow banana has the right firmness and pliability.
c) A brown banana is very soft and mushy.
If you eat bananas, make sure to give them a chance to ripen, sweeten up.
You’ll enjoy it more.

Ma likes her bananas a little on the green side. I don’t eat bananas but our guinea pig sure loves them. Ma buries the banana peels around her roses. Roses love the peels and will give you triple the blooms.
Is thar how you stay so golden 🙂
Great to know as someone likes to eat bananas around here…
We never knew so much things about bannanas than now :), we will surely pick the right bananas to eat now
Hmm, I’s never tried bananas before because my momma hates ’em since she was a little kid and had banana-flavored medicine when she were real sick. But dey look pretty interesting . . .
Thats the one thing Del won’t eat! He hates bananas but will eat almost ANYTHING else. Perhaps he’d prefer an over-ripe one.. Will check it out. He much prefers an apple 🙂
I just love bananas!! The girls…not so much. Thank you for sharing all this terrific information about RIPE and unripe bananas!

I’m a just off green type of girl. It’s amazing how different bananas can taste depending on when you eat them!
Great banana tips!

So cute Sugar, I love green banana’s.
I love that bananas ripen on the counter! Buy ’em green, eat ’em yellow, freeze ’em brown for smoothies and bread!
Mom and I love our bananas…we share one a couple of times a day.
BOL – well, the banana I gave Harlow was ripe. This morning I pulled another banana from the bunch and she went into the living room. She isn’t going to take another chance.

Mom doesn’t eat bananas so I never get any. 🙁 Maybe she’ll listen to these tips and let some go brown so she can make banana bread – I also wouldn’t mind some tasty tasty ice cream!
I love banana’s Sugar, gussie and mags do not which means there is more for me and my mom.

One more Banana fact fur you…. YOUNG Children should NEVER be given bananas that have any green on them…

Sugar, you are a banana expert! I don’t think I would like them though. I don’t like anything sweet! Wooo!
Mom doesn’t buy bananas anymore she likes them on the green side once they get too ripe she tosses them. I would love to try one! Love Dolly
Mmmm, now we want a banana for breakfast and we are all out!
Wyatt and Stanzie
Chewy wishes he got a banana every day like Sugar. This morning he heard me rip a banana off the bunch from across the house and IMMEDIATELY came and sat pretty.
There are so many things you can do with Bananas and so many ways to prepare them! We love making Banana muffins with browning ones, and a banana sliced up with a little bit of peanut butter frozen makes for a sweet delicious treat. We have yet to try to make the banana ice cream though.
Great guide on banana ripeness! 🙂 I actually don’t like when my fruit is ripe so I usually eat it right before it turns ripe. I’m weird I guess!
How interesting! Now of course the bananas from Costco don’t follow normal banana rules. We wonder about them!

Hey Sugar
We are well my peeps are serious banana folks too. Mom eats one on her Cheerios every morning
Hugs
Madi your bfff.
Yumm! I love ripe bananas, but I share any mushy parts with Petal because I don’t like the texture, lol. I have an Aunt who prefers her bananas to be GREEN, she likes them hard, yuck!
I did not know that green bananas are mostly starch, you learn something new everyday. Thanks Sugar!
Great post. I am on a strict diet for pancreatitis…Interesting fact I found out about bananas. I can eat bananas only when they are slightly green to yellow with no spots. Why no spots? When the banana begins to ripen it begins the fermentation process turning the sugars to alcohol. Who knew. Alcohol not good for pancreas.
I give my Baylie Dog yellow bananas, only; never completely ripe bananas.
Me and my momma love bananas, too! They are paws down the bestest fruit there is out there.
We were going to answer…..ask a monkey LOL. Have a terrific Tuesday Sugar.
Best wishes Molly
Good advice! Earl LURVS bananas 🙂

What a great explanation. We have been eating bananas a lot lately! I love when they are yellow, but think they are too mushy once they start turning brown.
We all go bananas over you pretty Sugar!
We always get the more brown ones…I guess we are lucky since they are sweeter, but Mom doesn’t like them too brown, what a shame we have to take over at that point!
The dogs aren’t too picky, but the humans here are very particular about the ripeness of their bananas! They have to be JUST RIGHT, not too green, not too ripe. I think there’s usually about a 2 day window when they’re perfect! Neither of the girls care for bananas that much, but the boys love them. But if we mix them up with some yogurt the girls will eat them then!
lately all the bananas that have been in the store have been VERY green
Callie and Shadow don’t like the texture of bananas, but if I hide them in a frozen yogurt treat, they don’t seem to know the difference. Ducky will eat just about anything I give her. 🙂
My kids love banana ice cream! 🙂
It is funny that you did a post about ripe bananas. My hubby has been complaining about the bananas I have been buying and that they are not ripe. I told him it is because it is winter and the weather has given truckers a headache and that is all they have at the store. Guess I should start prebuying bananas…lol.
