Sugar suffers from allergies since she was a young pup. We are fortunate to have a good vet that assisted us to find the causes of Sugar’s allergies. Changing Sugar’s kibble food to grain free has been helpful. Last year when Sugar had a major ear infection, our vet supported us to pursue treatments in a more natural way. Sugar does not do well on medications, especially as a 12 yr old senior dog. Medications make Sugar weak and prohibit her from doing fun outdoor activities. Wearing PawZ dog boots all season has been beneficial conquering her allergies, paw licking and causing her to have raw skin. It sounds silly to be told that your dog needs to avoid grass.
A Dog’s PAW can pick up many pollutants.
Make sure to wash your dog’s feet/leg regularly to reduce licking.
Totally understand how Sugar has sensitive skin. It’s quiet impossible for a dog to stay off grass. We continue to wash/wipe Sugar’s paws to avoid paw licking and raw skin. However, there are times Sugar’s allergies occur and the paw/leg licking happens. Soothing BATHS surely alleviates Sugar’s allergies.
Make sure to check back on Friday and will share you some of the natural products we currently use that ease Sugar’s allergies.
Below is an infographic from Chastain Veterinary Medical Group that explains what you need to know about Canine Allergies.

Great infographic, Boomer and Dottie sometimes have a little allergic reaction when things are blooming but not too bad.
Oh Sugar, we both have such terrible allergies, don’t we? You were (and still are) so right about the PawZ boots. They have helped me a lot and I thank you for recommending them to me. I really like this infographic. Thanks for sharing and here’s to a less itchy season!

So sorry that you have such allergies! We are happy that none of us have any and we sure hope it stays that way. The only one that might have allergies would be Mom, but she seems to have that under control these days with her Vitamin D.
Great infographic! Bella has licked her paws her whole life and I’d always thought it was just a quirky behavior (much like cats clean themselves), but now I’m wondering if maybe she doesn’t have some sort of allergies or if it’s maybe because her paws get cracked and dry…We’ll be looking into it and are curious to read your Friday post about handling Sugar’s allergies.
Bear suffers from allergies too- and I loved this infographic. We also wear pawz booties, so I need to be better about him wearing those more often- and washing the feet/legs is a great tip.
We also bathe bi-weekly to keep his skin and coat happy, and that has made a huge improvement for all of us 🙂
Lucky we don’t have any Sugar but always good to know what to look out for. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
Has any one tried or heard of Itchy Dog by ZoomDog Supplements? I use it on my going-on-13 yr old Australian Cattle Dog. She isn’t a fan of having her paws touched / groomed / looked at. Booties are out of the question. Giving her a natural “treat” is easier and is less stressful. She stopped licking and chewing her paws after 4 weeks!
Yes! Love Dolly
Yes, Shiner has allergies too. I bought Pawz but the size is too small… One of the worst cases of itchies from allergies I saw, we could not figure out what the dog was allergic too. He was in and out of rescue because his skin was absolutely horrible. After being tested, it turned out that he was allergic to human dander… poor guy =/
Yep – we’re with you! Lola’s paws (in between the pads) get very irritated and the licking begins. We also bought booties for her to trot around in outside and have learned how to deal with it the best we can. Sharing 🙂
Yeah Cody’s been having allergies. The Pollen Vortex is taking it’s toll.
Great information. Tucker had a horrible time with allergies so I feel your pain Sugar. Wiping their paws is a great practice.
So glad my gang doesn’t have allergy’s, they are not fun.
Great infograph. It’s good to be reminded about our dogs paws! Thanks for sharing
