According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, July is Blueberry month.
Did you know? Blueberries are grown in 35 out of 50 states. Blueberries are in season from April through October, but July is prime blueberry season.
Are Blueberries Safe For Dogs?
Blueberries are known to be a “super fruit”, good for you and for your dog.
It contains phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are chemicals produced by plants that affects health. Blueberries are a rich source of phytochemicals such as anthocyanidins, flavonoids, resveratrol, anthocyanins, ellagic acid (from phytochemicals.info)
Don’t be surprised to see blueberries as an ingredient in your dog’s food and dog’s treat. Blueberries are low in calories and rich in fiber. Blueberries are know as an excellent source for Vitamin A & C, potassium and most importantly antioxidants. Blueberries have more antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetable. Antioxidants are known to strengthen the immune system.
How To Choose a Good Blueberry?
Look for firm blueberries with even coloring, deep purple-blue color. Most blueberries in the store are in a container. A tip from the produce guy: Shake the blueberry container gently to make sure they move easily and are free of mold.
Keep in mind, blueberries are given as a dog treat. Provide your dog with blueberries in moderation. Too many blueberries may result in gastric upset and diarrhea. If your dog has a digestive history, make sure to consult your vet before giving your dog blueberries.

I didn’t know July was the best month for blueberries. I love them, especially in my yogurt. Shiner isn’t a fan of them when they are by themselves but will eat them in treats and stuff.
Blueberries are expensive here. We don’t think SHE’ll share HERs with us!
LadyBug loves blueberries…but Chloe can detect a blueberry from a mile away and does not like them…you have some awesome recipes here! Thanks!
Ours love them and so do we. We’re getting ready to go pick some, much cheaper than buying in the stores and farmers markets, and fun. These recipes sound pawsome!!
yummy, now I want to go buy some blueberries
Yum! Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie love blueberries and we’ve enjoyed several of your recipes, Sugar 🙂
Blueberries are cool they make a blue tongue. I like that :o) We love them on a cake and even I like one or two. Have a tasty tuesday!
Blueberries fall into that fruit and veggies my pups don’t enjoy. I love them though!
Wow…. I didn’t know dat blueberries are good for me. I’m gonna run and tell Mom. She loves and eats blueberries all da time. She even went to the blueberry festival in Burgaw, NC in June and brought home loads of blueberries.
Thanks for the info Sugar.

We actually planted two blueberry bushes last year and had a bumper crop this year – we have bags of them in the freezer to last us well over winter
WE love Blueberries…. butt you are sooooo correct (as always) if you eat too many… your poop shooter will go wild.
Momma mixes blueberries into her morning Greek yogurt. She freezes them when she gets a lot. I love snacking on frozen blueberries!
Sounds tasty.
I didn’t know there was a month dedicated to blueberries! They are quite popular over here. I’m definitely going to try some of the blueberry recipes.
No blueberries over here as they are far too expensive. There are some yummy looking treats there Sugar. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

The Lapdogs absolutely LOVE blueberries!!!
My pups love blueberries! We need to try some of your recipes. 🙂
For whatever reason, my huskies are just not to fond of blueberries. Not when they’re by themselves anyways. I will have to try and make something out of them. Oh and BTW, I wanted to let you know that I tried your banana peanut butter dog ice cream, and it was a huge hit! The huskies loved it!!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
I’m so bad about giving the dogs fresh fruit. And remembering what they like. Thanks for the blueberry reminder!
I always tell Blueberry, you are what you eat… hehehehe – she loves them too. Although she does prefer them in baked goods, as do I. The only thing better than a homemade blueberry pie is a sweet Blueberry snuggled up next to me for a belly rub. 🙂
Thanks for the recipes Sugar. Blueberries are one of our favorites and we put them in our yogurt everyday….oh the dogs? Yeah they get a few tossed to them too.
We love blueberries! There used to be a blueberry farm close to us and we’d take the kids out and pick gallons to freeze. As always, your recipes sound delicious!
Blueberries are tasty for sure! We usually have them in frozen treats or in ice, but sometimes we get some plain ones too. I found some blueberry bushes not far from our house a couple years ago and I still enjoy walking by and eating a few off the bush. They are just part of the landscaping on the street, not anyone’s personal garden, so it is alright to munch a few.
Thanks for sharing, Sugar! I will have to make my girls some blueberry treats!!
I’m thinking about some blueberry ice cream . . .
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley

We get blueberries in our morning kibble every day all year round. Dad loes them too so we get lucky:)
Woos – Phantom, Ciara, and Lightning
Those are a ton of different options for blueberries-you are so creative with food prep!
I always believe that too much of anything isn’t good, so I usually try to rotate around Bain’s favorite snacks no matter what.
He loves frozen blueberries, but doesn’t really seem to want any at room temperature and ends up staring at them.
I picked my own blueberries again this year. It always takes me a long time to get a bucket full since I do like to make sure they are the most plump and dark.
Great post and love the blueberry recipes! Looking forward to trying them out.
