Today is Sugar’s blog friend Oz the Terrier 10th Barkday. We met Oz last year. He was a bit shy but he’s so sweet and has a cute smile.
Oz has a dark colored coat/fur and it can be difficult to photograph.
Oz mom asked if I can take a couple photos of Oz. I was honored to photograph Oz, as I am not a professional photographer. I provided Oz’s mom photography tips based on what I learned from taking different photo subjects.
5 Tips for Taking Photos of Dark Colored Dogs
1) Lighting – Natural light is the best to get a dark colored dog stand out.
2) Background – Never photograph against a dark background and/or surroundings.
3) Close Up – Great way to feature your dog’s fur and face is through a close-up photo. The effect creates a depth and captures your dog’s unique character.
4) Shooting Mode – Use the continuous shooting mode on your camera. (This feature might not be available for a point-n-shoot.) Don’t wait for the moment. Usually, the best shots are the unexpected and sudden moments.
5) Most important is always to have FUN.
Make sure to find some time to visit and greet Oz the Terrier.
Oz’s mom is doing something very special to celebrate his 10th Barkday!
Golden Happy to co-host Black n White Sunday Blog Hop with Dachshund Nola.
Have a PAWsome FUN Sunday!
Love this! it can be difficult to photograph Lucy sometimes, that’s why we don’t have as many pictures of her up on our Instagram. Most of them are close ups, just as you suggested. We’ll definitely use some of these tips, thanks Sugar!

Great tips and subject! You are so correct, dark coated dogs are difficult to photograph. OZ and Sugar look so cute together~
Great tips Sugar! You’re always learning with photography 🙂 Oz is gorgeous. It’s great to meet up with blogging friends, although I’ve only met blogging people, no dogs yet!
Experiment and don’t be afraid to break the rules! 🙂
You two are so cute! 😀
Hi Y’all!
Oh what a cute contrast the two of you make! The dark and the light of it! Now have to check out a couple of the posts from this past week that I missed!
Y’all hurry on by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Black dogs are probably the most difficult to photograph as even their eyes and noses blend into the fur. White dogs are not easy either, but at least their eyes and noses stand out. Have a great Sunday!
Happy Barkday to everybody’s buddy Oz! Great photos of his sweet face
Hugs Madi your BFFF
Great tips! Our best dog friends are dark so we have been there! Happy BW Sunday!
Great tips. Lady says Lee always looks best in the yard in the sun! Have a great day.
I have a black dog (Lilah) and it is a challenge taking pictures of her. I love doing close-ups. I agree that lighting is important. I love taking pictures of her on cloudy days when there is less contrast.

What wonderful pictures 🙂
Great tips and great pictures of your pal Oz. Happy happy BIrthday to Oz!
These are GREAT tips, Sugar and mom! We get such better photos of me outside, in good natural light, compared to photos inside. We use all the tips you gave us…and oh, what memories in those photos! We had such a great time with you at BarkWorld.
Oz
Great tips. You look so cute together 🙂 I have much better luck taking better photos with natural light, it’s so much easier than trying to get good shots inside. Laika’s actually my first non dark colored dog so I’ve definitely faced those challenges before and I must say looking back all the best shots were outside.
Oz is such a cutie. I have to watch how I shoot Roxy because she is dark, and sometimes blend in to the background.
Great tips and Happy Birthday to Oz!
Thanks for the tips Sugar…Maggie is always tough to photograph, so I’ll keep these in mind.
We know all about taking pictures of dark colored dogs! Great tips and we love Oz too! Love Dolly
Great photography tips and Happy Birthday to Oz the Terrier!
Those are wonderful tips. Happy Sunday smiles to you and your family

Great tips and great photos! That Oz is very handsome…Happy Birthday pal!
thanks for the tips, it’s really difficult to take good picture of dark colored dogs or even dark things, we will try it.
Have a super sunday, Sugar, I’m so glad that you met Oz in the furs once!
Great tips for black kitties too 🙂
GREAT tips!! I have some really great pics of Ducky on my iPhone, but they are all taken in natural light or, where necessary, “enhanced” with the iPhone’s photo filters. I like to take close ups but sometimes I have to back off a little and then do the cropping to turn it into a cLose-up. I haven’t used my regular camera since the laptop died. But now that I have a new laptop that will accept my SD memory cards, I’ll be using the camera again. YAY,
Those are some pawsome tips Sugar!! I personally thinks Oz always looks FABulous, butts I bets his Moms is gonna gets even better pics now!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Great tips Sugar and we do love Oz. Have a serene and easy Sunday.
Best wishes Molly
Great tips Sugar!
Sephi was always difficult to photograph. Natural light almost always worked… almost. I’d generally take dozens of photos of her at different angles and hope some of them turned out.
Great photos! I really like the four photos together. We have started using the continuous shot mode. I like it, but sometimes I just end up with lots bad pictures ,
Those are great pictures of Oz.
Great tips and we love all of our photos! ♥
I have the hardest time with Nola and Pike. Either Pike’s overexposed or Nola’s underexposed.

Great advice – I’d also add that you might want to consider bumping up the exposure. You may risk some of your background getting blown out (aka too white), but it could be worth it if it brings more range to your doggie’s face!
I often have a hard time taking great photos of my Frenchie bc she is dark in color. Thank you for sharing these tips. I will have to try them out.
