PetSmart is known as the largest specialty pet retailer. Did you know PetSmart also offers dog grooming? Sugar was recently groomed by a PetSmart dog groomer.

Being new to Southern California, we were on the hunt for a dog grooming salon. We’ve personally been grooming Sugar for the past three months. It may not be obvious to everyone, but Sugar’s fur is growing back unevenly especially by her ears, back sides section. As part of Sugar’s grooming maintenance, trimming her nails has been a ritual but we have the hardest time trimming the fur on her paws.
Sugar badly needed to be groomed by a professional dog groomer. Surprisingly, many have recommended PetSmart® grooming. We’ve visited five PetSmart locations and selected The District- Tustin, CA grooming salon. It’s quite a drive but going to PetSmart is always an adventure trip for Sugar.
We chose this location because we observed, via PetSmart grooming salon window, how busy they were and watched how a PetSmart groomer groomed a Golden Retriever. We were impressed plus the facility is always clean and well-maintained. Also, there were many happy customers leaving the grooming salon.
Good grooming is essential to the health and comfort of your dog.
PetSmart Grooming Appointment
PetSmart offers on-line booking for pet grooming services. You can book an appointment online, https://pets.petsmart.com/services/grooming/, choosing a specific groomer and get a call, text alerts or emails notifying you when your pet is ready to be picked up.
Since this is our first time, I booked Sugar’s appointment in-person and had a pleasant conversation with the dog groomer, Melissa. Also, Melissa had an opportunity to meet Sugar and assessed her grooming needs. Sugar instantly liked Melissa, which was a good sign that she will have a pleasant grooming experience. Take Note: All pets must be in good health before receiving any PetSmart grooming services. A proof of current rabies vaccinations from the vet is required to submit when making the appointment. PetSmart does not perform services on pets eight weeks or younger.
PetSmart Grooming Services
PetSmart offers a variety of grooming services for dogs of all breeds. PetSmart grooming salon features state-of-the-art technology. Since this is our first time grooming Sugar at PetSmart, I asked a lot of questions especially since pet parents are not allowed to assist with grooming or be in the grooming kennel and bathing areas. (However, I was told that it is possible for pet parents to tour the grooming kennel and bathing areas with the supervisor’s permission. check with your local PetSmart grooming services.) Through my questioning, I learned about PetSmart groomers and their grooming salon services.
4 Things You Need To Know About PetSmart Grooming
1. Each professional PetSmart groomer is qualified to care for all breed of dogs. They are academy-trained dog groomers and completed an intensive training course that includes over 400 hours of technical and safety training.
Also according to Melissa, every groomer goes through hands-on training. Each qualified dog groomer must groom 100 dogs before they can officially be a commissioned a PetSmart groomer. They also need to groom three specific breeds of dogs: Cocker Spaniel, Schnauzer, and Poodle. Why? These breeds can determine if the groomer is ready to groom based on their ability to shape and show individual skills for each dog breed.
2. PetSmart grooming prides themselves on having high safety standards. Each groomer must learn and implement these safety procedures, and PetSmart requires all groomers to be safety certified annually and take additional course-work where they learn about dog anatomy, signs of stress and common pet medical conditions.
Also, I was told that the Animal Control of Orange County inspects PetSmart grooming salons every six months. Check your county’s animal control if they implement a pet safety inspection for your city’s PetSmart grooming location.
3. Bathing + Drying Procedures – Sugar loves getting a bath. She’s 14 yrs old and I do worry about her ‘bath’ comfort level. I’ve previously shared that regulated water temperature and nozzle spray plays an essential role to Sugar’s bath. It’s good to know that PetSmart uses a state of the art bathing system with water that is infused with oxygen; which cleans a dog’s coat and makes their skin healthy. Also, it has a deep massaging function that evenly distributes the right amount of shampoo/conditioner, plus it’s gentle feature benefits puppies, senior dogs and dogs with bathing anxiety.
I was very concerned about PetSmart Grooming drying procedures. I’m pleased to know from Melissa that they mostly use a towel dry and hand blow dryer method.
4. PetSmart has a Look Great Guarantee! PetSmart promises that you’ll love their grooming services and will do whatever it takes to make it right – including offering your money back if you are unhappy with their services.
I am very happy with PetSmart grooming services. Sugar had a Bath + Haircut with an add-on Ultra Soothing Oatmeal Shampoo. With the bath, Sugar’s ears were cleaned out and her nails were trimmed and grind (as I requested). I also received a hand-written progress report of grooming services provided by Melissa.
Lots of Golden Thanks to Melissa and PetSmart Grooming
Sugar’s Golden Fur felt so soft, and she looks awesome. Melissa did a great job; trimming off just the right amount of fur. Sugar’s nails and paws were properly done (like the way we do it). Sugar was all smiles and was not stressed. I was so relieved to see her happy, calm and relaxed. Sugar had an enjoyable 1st PetSmart grooming experience.
A Well-Groomed Dog is a Happy Dog.
So sweet of Melissa that she added a ‘darling touch’ – orange bows and a holiday PetSmart bandana. Lastly, I greatly appreciate the fun friendly and team-work oriented groomer associates; special traits needed to work with pets and their pet parents.

So glad that Sugar had a good experience at PetSmart’s Grooming Salon! It never ceases to amaze me that Sugar looks SO awesome in every single photo!! Awesome review…thanks for sharing!
Sadly I have only ever taken Reilly once to a ‘professional’ groomer and yes it was a petsmart and yes – they messed up big time – after specifically telling them NOT to cut his fur they trimmed him all over – I was furious and the only thing the manager had to say was they would give a free grooming service – as if I would ever trust them or anyone again. Since then I have stuck to grooming both boys myself.
I recently found out a “full groom’ means a shave. I had the same thing happen to me with my little Pomeranian. I took him for what I thought was a bath and general groom. They shaved him and I was very unhappy. Very confusing.
WOW Sugar you look beautiful after your pampering at PetSmart!
Sugar that are fabulous groomers! And I’m deep impressed how wellbehaved you were while that lady worked on your golden fur! 4 paws from france for such a beautiful golden girl.
Great post! Ours goes up Wed!
Aw – she looks so pretty! Grooming is hard work lol. I used to give baths, nail trims, and haircuts to dogs and cats. It takes a long time!
You look beautiful Sugar. We were there the other day and saw all the pups getting washed and prettied 🙂

Well, all I can say is that I’m glad the PetSmart stores out there hire decent groomers. Back here I wouldn’t give them five cents. I’ve seen too many dogs come out of there looking like something out of a horror or sci-fi flick. No thank you! I’ll stick with our current groomer. She has always done a beautiful job on Callie and Shadow, and she loves my girls almost as much as I do. (Ducky gets groomed at daycare when she needs to be.)
We had a marvelous experience with PetSmart. We took Pierre recently and they did a marvelous job. I’m glad that Sugar also enjoyed her time being groomed.
We only have a Petco in our town, they do grooming also

Awww, Sugar looks gorgeous! Such pretty bows!
I’m so glad Sugar had such a great experience! We’ve used PetSmart Grooming for a couple of years now, and have always been pleased.
Sugar looks great! Eve had a really good experience with her Petsmart grooming too.
i like the feathers although sugar is so cute, she would look cute and adorable anyway, even shaved. however, i would never take my dog to petco/petsmart to be groomed, unless you plan to watch the entire time ….i have read horror stories of dogs dying, cut off an ear and glued it back on. there have been several incidents in the past 2 yrs at both of these salons. in addition, with the canine flu, i would not take my dog, unless you are certain that they sanitize the place and the grooming tools. i think there were incidents this past yr of 2 dogs dying in fl. the owners even warned the store of problems using a blowdryer on high heat. one dog fell of the grooming table when the person left them. so be very careful.
I’ve taken my little Riley to PetSmart for grooming in the past. We went there because that was where we had puppy classes and I figured she’d be somewhat more at ease there. I think the groomers did a good job and seemed to really enjoy working with the pups, but Riley was usually real happy to leave once the grooming was over. That was part of the reason I chose to try another place, though a big part of the reason I took her to Wags on Willow is to support a local small business rather than a major chain. I didn’t know the PetSmart groomers went through all the training you mentioned. One thing I did like about taking Riley to PetSmart was that it was easy to get an appointment on short notice – they were usually busy, lots of clients there, but there were normally a full staff of groomers when I was there. I may give them a try again as they are closer.

Sugar you look PAW-fabulous!! I am so glad to hear of your positive experience at Petsmart grooming.
If Petsmart groomers are annually certified why is the service inconsistent?
Unfortunately, not all Petsmart grooming is consistent and a situation that needs awareness to correct. The leaders of Petsmart need to re-educate store managers to accomplish a higher level of consistency and customer service. I point this out so that others do not have the same negative experience my pet and I encountered.
