Poinsettias are lovely and the quintessential holiday plant. According to petpoisonhelpline.com, poinsettia plants are only mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The poinsettia milky white sap contains chemicals that can cause a non life-threatening mouth and skin irritation. Eating poinsettia leaves can stomach upset. Keep your pets safe this holiday, place poinsettias out of reach.
And all this time I was told it was near instant death if they got a hold of one. Looks like I can have then in the house after all, as long as I’m careful.
Yep, poinsettias aren’t all dat bad fur ya… not that I’d eat any… I prefer meatz™ myself…
Bert is the only one who might actually eat a plant like that, but so far he stays away from plants. They are so pretty and make such beautiful decorations. Ours are usually up a bit higher so we can’t get at them even if we wanted to.
Hi Y’all!
Sugar, you are so cute!
Y’all come on by!
Hawk aka BrownDog
we have a plastic poinsettia since I live in this crib… and I think that was a wise decision… it gets some chew marks every year :o)
The old cat who used to live here (he passed away at 20) would climb all over the house to get to a plant and chew on it, including the annual poinsettia. By the time people started publishing, “they’re poison” we knew that wasn’t true because the old cat was already old…and still chewing plants. Not that we recommend trying this at home! We think old cat may have had some special guardian angel – or being cranky from birth gave him special powers; no matter what he got into, he never got sick. We sure miss cranky old cat. Our newer cranky cat is much quieter in comparison and doesn’t complain as often; once you’ve spent 18.5 years listening to a cat comment on how you’re failing him, you actually sort of miss it….
Thanks for the holiday safety tip, Sugar! Happy WW
Thanks for the tip, Sugar! It’s good to know in case your pup just takes a small bite, you don’t have to panic. I always thought they were deadly.
Thanks for the info Sugar!

Good to know. We thought they were very toxic

Interesting information. Thank you.
Thanks for clarifying this, Sugar. I have heard such mixed things on this subject.
Mom never buys them…even if they aren’t deadly who wants a tummy ache or burning lips
Hugs madi your bfff
I adore poinsettias. But my first dog was one of the unlucky sorts of pooches with multiple health problems, and after he developed a nasty bout of vomiting after eating a poinsettia leaf, I had to ban them from my home. I’m glad the plants aren’t toxic, but the indigestion the leaves can cause is really intense!

We are lucky that mom is a plant executioner so we don’t have any in the house.

Great info to have, Sugar. If there is a poinsettia in our house, Mom always keeps it in a room where we aren’t allowed. Best to err on the side of caution.

I always thought Poinsettia plants were much more toxic, I’m glad to see they’re only mildly toxic! I’ll still keep them well out of reach of my dogs though.
