Unfortunately, most dogs and cats develop periodontal disease by the age of 3. Do you know the major cause of periodontal disease? Bad Breath! There’s no such thing as “doggy bad breath” or “cat bad breath.” Even senior dogs or cats shouldn’t have bad breath. If you notice your pets’ breath smell, see your veterinarian.
Even Senior Dogs Shouldn’t Have Bad Breath
Other Signs of Periodontal Disease
– bleeding, swollen or red gums
– tartar on teeth
– excessive drooling
– bumps or lumps in the mouth
– discolored and loose teeth
– difficulty chewing or loss of appetite
– unwilling to play or decrease in energy
To protect your pet’s from other infection, it is important to treat and control periodontal disease. If not treated, it can lead to dangerous health conditions such as lung, kidney, or heart disease.
The best thing for your pet’s dental health is a daily brushing. However for some pet parents, brushing can be challenging. Many pets are fuzzy and don’t like to get their teeth brushed.
Keep Your Pet’s Teeth Clean Without Brushing
There are a number of alternatives to brushing to help your pet maintain good oral health. Dental Chews are essentially treats that help your pet’s overall dental health through ingredients, texture and shape of the treat.

Do you give your dog (cat) dental chews?
My dog loves dental chews!
We’ve been wanting to try these for a while. We’ve tried brushing, and we give them Greenies, hooves and bones.
I’ve also read of people having success cleaning their dogs teeth with coconut oil and the cotton make up squares.
We brush our dog’s teeth and they enjoy Greenie’s quite a bit.
I have four rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds who don’t like having their teeth brushed,so I give them dental chews and keep an eye on their teeth. I also have some dental gel I put on their teeth and I do try to brush them when I can.

I occasionally give my dog dental chews. I don’t do enough for his mouth health.
My Bailey gets dental chews he loves them.
yes we give her chews all the time, she loves them.
I have different types of chewers so each dog gets their preference. One dog is obsessed with chewing on the giant white Nylabones That dog has the cleanest teeth the Vet has ever seen. The other dogs are not picky and will chew on almost any dog treat or specialized chew that they get on a regular basis.
We give Abby greenies and don’t her teeth are in good shape between that and regular checkups,we’d love to try whimz????
i dont give them dental chews, they get small bully sticks for the 2 younger girls and the oldest gets her dried tripe sticks, they get their teeth brushed every nite, have tooth gel, go to the dental specialist for check ups every 3 mos or so, he only does teeth and is abt 190 miles away. they also get a solution in their water. all of the products were developed by the dental specialist. i have also learned how to scape the tartar off their teeth, and use the human flossies that have the little brushes at the ends on the youngest girl since she has some spaces in her front teeth. she has had gum graphs and root planing. all of the girls have had fillings as well. my rule of thumb is not to give them any treats or chews that i cant make a dent in it with my fingernail. my oldest cracked 2 of her teeth on something her previous vet had given her. my dental vet is very strict abt what chews, toys they can play with, no tennis balls, no pull toys, etc. people come from all over the us to see him. he started the dental program at the nc vet school yrs ago.
Mine get Greenies dental chews and Nylabones. They get their teeth cleaned once or twice a year.

Our guys all get dental bones.
I would love to try these for my 3 golden boys. I have tried the greenies on occasion but they would rather chew on elk antlers and eat a healthy diet in order to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
I don’t give my dog dental chews very often but it’s because I forget to buy them. I really need to get better at helping him get clean teeth. I know that the vet can do it but it’s expensive and he needs to be sedated.
