I love public art. Public art provides a new perspective to experience a town or city. On our dog-friendly travels, I enjoy taking Sugar on a public art photo op.
Scottsdale Public Art The Love Sign
One fun touristy activity I like to do in Scottsdale Arizona is the self-guided art walking tour. The Love Sign is located at dog friendly the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza; number 15 must see on the art walking tour.
The Love Sign was created by Robert Indiana. He started experimenting with ‘LOVE’ in 1958 during the Vietnam War; wherein the word LOVE became the symbol for Peace.
There are a number of different colored ‘Love Sign’ editions. This edition, purchased by Scottsdale Public Art Program, was the first in a series of five.
My goal is that LOVE should cover the world. -Robert Indiana
Scottsdale’s The Love Sign sculpture is made of poly-chromed red and blue aluminum, about 6 feet in height and width and weighs 3,800 lbs. The sign consists of the big letters L and O over the big letters V and E. The letter O is uniquely slanted sideways which semi-align to the letter V.
I had no idea LOVE would catch on the way it did. Oddly enough, I wasn’t thinking at all about anticipating the Love generation and hippies. It was a spiritual concept. It isn’t a sculpture of love any longer. It’s become the very theme of love itself. -Robert Indiana

Such a beautiful picture by the LOVE sign!
I love that sign. It seems there were postage stamps with that LOVE on it too. ♥
It is such a great piece.
I had no idea it was so big! I’ve seen photos before, but nothing with a measurement. Thanks for teaching me something today!
