I contemplated getting pet insurance for Sugar and decided not to get one. Why? After calculation, I didn’t think it was worth the money. Pets Best was one of the pet insurance company I considered.

Instead of getting pet insurance, I created a ” Sugar Fund” where I set aside a monthly amount to be used for her health expenses. With Sugar’s allergies and frequent vet visits, the fund quickly depleted. Sugar has surpassed her life expectancy, and health emergency often happens. Now, I wish I had invested in pet insurance.
Did you know? According to the 2015 North American Pet Health Insurance Association, the total number of insured dogs & cats in the US is 1,230,006 (dogs 1,031,898 and cats 198,108). The number seems large, but it only equates to .75% of dogs and cats in the US are insured.
“Pet insurance is a $650 million industry and with four out of five pets experiencing a medical emergency in their lifetime. Having reliable coverage is critical. Additionally, one in three pets will need unexpected veterinary care each year.”

I wish I had pet insurance too for Shiner!
I had insurance for BJ from Pets Best. They were quick for reembuersement and very helpful when I called with questions. They were very helpful to me because I fell behind with submitting bills after BJ died. They contacted the vet for the missing invoices.
I was very fortunate because BJ had no costly illnesses and only needed his shots, dental, and check up. So with BJ I’m not sure if I paid more that I paid out.
When BJ got sick in November it cost me more in vet bills than his vet bill for his prior 15.5 years.
I have to do some calculations for getting insurance when I got another dog.
One item I would add to your excellent list is the coverage for some electives procedures that would improve the quality of life. Cataract surgery is being performed more widely.
I would check to see if it was covered. Of course 15 years ago that procedure was unheard of.
I was nice seeing you and Sugar at BlogPaws.
We have medical doggie insurance through PetsBest and have had to use them several times, mainly for Missy’s cancer treatment. We were very happy with their quick reimbursement of 90% of all vet costs via direct deposit into our bank account (after the $200 deductible). Our monthly investment into doggie insurance has already paid for itself!
