Maverick and Me | Teaching Kids About Pet Adoption
Katherine Schwarzenegger got involved in animal rescue by fostering puppies. She’s a “foster fail” parent of Maverick, a very sick puppy that was found under a freeway. Katherine hopes her book, Maverick and Me, can spark conversations among young children and their families about animals in need and choose to adopt a pet.
“I decided to write this book for children so they are made aware of the option of adopting when the time comes to get their first pet.” – Katherine Schwarzenegger
Katherine Schwarzenegger is a philanthropist and ASPCA Ambassador. Katherine and the real Maverick live in California, where Katherine blogs about their adventures. Together, Maverick and Katherine spread a message of hope, defying all odds, and the joys of finding forever friends through pet rescue. You can read more at Katherine’s website: KatherineSchwarzenegger.com. See more of Maverick on Instagram: @maverickschwarzenegger
“My goal with this book is to not only teach kids about the option of rescuing a dog but also about all the ways they can help the many animals in need. Whether you rescue, foster, spend time volunteering, donate supplies or just spread the word about the thousands of loving animals that need to find their forever homes; all of it is important and makes a huge difference in the lives of all these special animals.”

I love it…and I love the illustrations… that#s 100% Maverick in the book, how pawsome!
My grandchildren will love this book. It is so important to teach young children the importance of helping animals in need and pet adoption is always an option.
So many pets in need of their forever home. Lots of ways to help and I find fostering is the best way. My grandchildren will love this book.
Volunteer at your local shelter; foster adoptable animals, collect donations instead of gifts at your birthday party!
Oh I love this book! This would be perfect for my granddaughter who is 2 & is already such an animal lover.
I work with a Boston Terrier rescue, we foster, babysit, go to events and work. So many animals don’t have a good person, so we need to give them love.
Looking forward to this book. I visit the senior shelter pups and they are always willing to snuggle up with a book. 🙂
We attend as many of the fundraising events in our area the we have time to attend. We also donate some our winnings from the internet that we win.
We would love this book. One of the dogs my nephew adopted is a shelter dog. He is one of the sweetest and smartest dogs we have had.
I wish I could take all the pets in shelters home with me. But since I can’t I try to bring toys and blankets, sheets and towels and treats to the shelters to at least give them something to play with while they are there and something soft to lay on.
I like to reach out to the shelters in my nearby area and ask what they are in need of. Shelters often need various things that the community doesn’t readily think of. Like newspapers, towels, cleaning supplies. So I like to reach out and see what they need first before making a donation.
