Travels With Casey is written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis, a writer for New York Times magazine and assistant professor at Emerson college. Denizet-Lewis started in the prologue ” I don’t think my dog likes me very much.”

Denizet-Lewis packed a rented RV and took his dog Casey, Lab/Golden Retriever mix, on a long journey of 13,000 miles in 4 months. They visited 32 states and stopped at various places that were dog related like dog show, police dogs, pampered pets, dog rescuers and healers. They learned many things about themselves, others dogs in America and the human-dog bond effect. Be prepared to laugh and sob. I was intrigued reading the section where Benoit and Casey met the “dog-poop lady.” Also, I enjoyed the chapter in which Casey gets a little sister and love how it ended with a quote, “Maybe the reason you’re paired with him is so you can learn to give him unconditional love. maybe Casey is here to teach you how to love.”

Travels With Casey is very well written and a delightful book to read. Denizet-Lewis has a wonderful way with words. He is provoking and entertaining through his journalistic style of narration,  There’s lots of LOVE in Travels With Casey. A must read for every dog lover. It can be technical but beneficial for pet parents. Also, the descriptive illustrations throughout the book are helpful.

This book is not a how-to but its a guide/reference. As Ms. Davis stated “The best practice is to provide physical therapy concurrently with veterinary care.”

Through out the book, Ms. Davis knowledge and experience are evident. The Best Guidance statements scattered in the book are good reminders: “The best treatment intervention plans are those that allow the entire team to communicate together, including the pet.”

Dutchess is a golden retriever dog born on Jan 28th, 2003. On 2010, Dutchess had pigmentary uveitis, an inherited disease that involves inflammation of both eyes. Dutchess had her eyes removed on Feb 2011 but her role as a Theraphy dog did not end. She continued to comfort and put a big smile to children and adults with Autism.

A Day with Dutchess is written by her owner Mark Condon & animal lover Julie Phillips. It’s about Dutchess work as a Blind Therapy Dog.

One day, Dutchess invited her doggie pal Droppy to go with her. Droopy was sad and wanted to be useful. Dutchess took Droopy to visit the Autism Center, Animal Shelter, the vet, pet boutique and organize an adoption fair for cats and dogs. Droopy observed Dutchess’ warmhearted work as a Therapy Dog. Dutchess showed Droopy “It’s the big things, the small things, all done with such care, that make our world one special place.”

A Day With Dutchess is beautifully illustrated by Sammy Schreiber. It’s a children’s book geared for pre-schoolers and elementary school aged readers. Definitely, adults and animal lovers will love this book too.
Dutchess’ blindness was not emphasized in the book but rather her work as a Therapy dog that teaches everyone the importance of caring and loving.

Dutchess is a Golden Retriever that loves tennis balls.

Dutchess is blind but it does not prohibit her to play the game of fetch. She uses her  hearing and Golden Sense of Smell to track down balls that are thrown for her. Did you know? Dutchess loves K9 Nose Work too and she passed her ORT (Odor Recognition Test). PAWmazing Golden Nose!
