Well, in 1557 a gentleman named Thomas Tusser
assembled a collection of writings he called
A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry.
In the section of April Husbandry he wrote:
Sweet April showers
Do spring May flowers.

It is a reminder that April rain can bring unpleasant weather
but it results in splendid things …
in this case an abundance of flowers in May.
