Backyard dining is a favorite in my house.
Lots of Tasty Food …
However, my peeps are very strict not feeding me any Table Scraps.
Can you see my pleading eyes and Golden SMILE …
begging to have some juicy tasty steak?

“NO! Sugar. NO! Table Scraps.”
It is true that its hard to resist when your dog begs out.
But as a responsible dog owner, you need understand a few table scraps can be a danger to your dog’s health.
Here are 2 Main Reasons …
WHY you should NOT Feed Your DOG Table Scraps?
1) Bad Doggie Habit/Manners
Feeding your dog Table Scraps certainly promotes Bad Doggie Habit/Manners. It encourages “begging” and once your dog learns this bad habit/manners you’ll regret it as you’ll be stuck with it. Dogs should not be feed at the table but rather have a set feeding place and time.
2) Safety and Health Issues
This is the most important reason why you should not feed your dog Table Scraps. Feeding your dog Table Scraps can lead to health issues. One of the most common issue is obesity. Feeding your dog Table Scraps leads to obesity overtime. From obesity, it also leads to other health problems such as heart, joint, and back problems. Table Scraps can also lead to your dog’s nutritional deficiencies. You have to talk to your vet if you feed or plan to feed your dog “home made diet.”
YES, Pleading Eyes (and SMILES) are just hard to resist.
But Remember …
Your LOVE for your Dog sometimes is not “giving in”
to what your dog WANTS but rather doing
what’s BEST for your dog NEEDS.

Hope Everyone is having a great weekend.
I’m participating in Blogville’s Back To School Bash. Click Here to read my Last Summer Hurrah: Watermelon blog post. Also, find some time to read my other bloggie friends blog post.
My Mom and Dad don't give me any table scraps either, they smell so good sometimes! Oh well, good thing I like my doggie food! Puppy kisses, Miss MIndy
How true! Those pleading eyes are sometimes so hard to resist but I have to make Holly wait until I'm finished. She will get her doggie treat after I'm done when she is in the right spot to receive it! She's a good girl…she sure knows how to wave that foot at me now! Lots of love, Debbie & Holly
Oh, those eyes….but very true. Our Sibes never get them, no matter how much they bat their blues at us! If they get any homemade food, it's in with their food at meal times. It's just like hu-kids, sometimes saying no IS what's best for them, even if they don't think so! Happy Sunday, Sugar and family! Husky hugs!
Marge, being as busy as she is with agility, obedience, and rally, does get human food occasionally. Chicken, turkey meatballs, and roast beef score high on her list. I need high-value rewards that she doesn't often have to keep her motivated and attentive. It's pretty common, actually. Of course, we balance this with her normal food (Merrick kibble), as well as a vitamin/joint/digestive supplement. I am VERY conscious of her weight.
But nothing peeves me more than a dog that begs. Marge, fortunately, lays quietly by our feet at the dinner table.
All so very true. Mom has been working forever to get Dad to understand this.
Happy Golden Sunday.

Excellent advice, Sugar! Thanks for posting about this…but boy did that steak look good!
Sugar, by the look on your pretty face in those pictures, we're thinking that your mom actually wrote this post and just had you sign it, cuz we think you would love some of that steak!! That being said, we don't get people food either. We want to keep our trim waistlines!!
-Gizmo, Bart and Ruby
Any scraps we feed our boys are set aside for dinner time, theirs, not ours. Plus, we try to give them "scraps" the vet recommends – green beans, sliced thin carrots (choking hazard!), pumpkin, lean chicken… Our boys still do the begging eyes at dinner though!
Sam
I agree, I get so sad when I see people feeding their dogs table scraps. I know they are doing it out of love, but it's so bad for them. Butters only really gets raw carrots. Great post!
We have learned to resist. Guests are much different

Wow! That steak looks so yummy! You sure have a lot of will power!
The Back-to-School Bash has been outstanding this weekend! Looking forward to more fun events. Those snacks at the PAWM sure were yummy!
The Road Dogs
Sometimes it is SOOOOOO hard fur my mom and dad to resist sharing their foods with me. I guess I am more lucky than some of you.. I do… manage to get them… when they are stuffs that I really love.
Now Sugar, why did you tell HER that? We think we were just wearing HER down!
kendra always finds her own scraps on walks. She eats anything….especially disgusting stuff.
XXXOOO Daisy, Kendra & Bella
Sugar,
Mom is da meany in my house. IF I get scraps from da table dey is healthy stuff like veggies and chicken. I always get dem in my food bowl PLUS I has to do a stoopid trick first…da nerve! 😉
Woofs and Licks,
Maggie Mae
Nala and I are never fed at the table. But we dream about it!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend! 🙂
Woofs & hugs, <3
~Bailey (Yep, I'm a girl!)
Guess we'll have to keep on dreamin' bout dose scraps. Now we nose why we is put behind a closed door when da peeps are eating. No Fair!!!
Yea, yea, Mom says that all the time!
Sheesh, those Pawrents can be real meanies sometimes!
See you in class!
woos, Tessa
I rarely give my boys table scraps either. They still beg though.
What a pawesome post Sugar!! We don't get table scraps for those exact reasons!!!
Smileys!

I agree with you referencing your quote on the bottom of the page.
We eat in the kitchen which is baby gated so Dakota can't go in there (because we feed Cody there)
We do share some apple with Dakota and other fruit that is safe for dogs. Sometimes if I make a turkey burger or a Piemontese Burger I will make one for him but we never feed him from the table
Very good advice indeed Sugar. Sometimes… my hoomans caved in… but most times, they are quite stingy with their foodies.
woofs n licks,
Dommy
Good advice but it's so easy to fool the hoomans at times! 🙂
Cheers,
Maxx
The boys absolutely get things other than kibble. They get 1/2 an egg on their breakfast, a dollop of non-fat cottage cheese on their lunch (makes yard cleanup easier) and some bits of lean chicken on their dinner.
People food isn't going to make your dog overweight. Too many calories for the amount of exercise does. 🙂
Sugar I hope my dad doesn't read your blog because he likes to give me table scraps even though mom tells him not to do it. That's why I always lay under dads chair until he's done eating.
Oh Sugar … that steak sure looks delicious. Enjoy your weekend.
We get itsy bitsy scraps but we have to wait till the end of the meal but we're not complaining!
Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch

Sugar, You've won an award 😀 Stop by Talking Dogs to pick it up!
Very good advice….but those eyes!!!! 🙂
Your parents are strong to resist, sometimes I give table scraps but I make sure to ask for a sit first (usually I do it if we are out to eat with one of the dogs). A lot of "people" food is actually very healthy for dogs and can be a good supplement to kibble. The whole dog journal has a good article about adding fresh "people" foods to kibble to boost nutrition
It's hard to resist those eyes and that plate!! A good reminder for ALL of us, with two and four legs!!
I hope you've had an enjoyable weekend!!
Sugar, you have good table manners!
All very true. Just try telling our Grandma!
we, also, do not prefer having to deal with dogs begging and hovering around human meal or snack times.
we taught desmond to go to his bed while we're eating and only when he's being very good do we ever let him have an extra special treat from our plates. of course, i'm very conscious of what and how much we're giving him. so far, it's been a good system.
