I am an energetic Retriever dog that LOVES to RUN. Yesterday I showed you this photo …
Just finished a 1.5 mile run/walk with my mom.
We are finishing up by running up the hill.
Why run with your dog?
Most dogs love to run. They were born to run and the best running partners.
Running is a great cardiovascular workout that helps maintain your dog’s weight.
It also helps improves muscle tone and definitely builds endurance.
Running makes me joyful and certainly helps release all my energy.
Have you tried to run with your dog?
First, I do recommend to check with your vet, if running is suitable for your dog. Also your dog must have an understanding and responds well on commands such as heel, side, sit, slow and back. Most importantly the “no” and “leave it” commands as your dog will encounter many distractions on your run.
If you walk with your dog that’s a good start.
As walking is the beginning stage of running.
Start with a 5 minutes brisk walk.
Then you can gradually proceed, 2mins of walk and 1min of run.
Increase your running minutes as you feel comfortable.
Always end with 5 minutes (or more) cool down walk.
Truly no strings attached on my purple PAWZ.
Many of you I’ve asked WHY? am I still wearing PAWZ, click here to read my previous post.
I guess doing agility when I was young, helped out with my jumping skills.
Yes I am a senior dog but have an energy of a pup.
My family has been so creative in keeping up with my energy.
Where am I in these photos? It’s my favorite park. I was just gone for a year and lots of great changes happened to this park. There’s a story/history behind this beautiful park. I will share it with you on Friday, April 26th as my friends Gizmo and Finn are hosting Park Day.
Give RUNNING with your dog a try … and always keep in mind to have FUN!

SUGAR
Hi Sugar,
I’m quite interested to know the story behind that park. Oh, so you have allergies, that’s why.
But anyway, I think you loved that purple paws.
Jim
My favorite shots are the ones with your ears sticking straight up!
I love running with my dogs, if only my body could keep up with it. If I’m not running, I do a brisk walk.
Look like your having the time of your life Sugar and mom too. 🙂
There is no way we would be able to run with our mama … There are days she has trouble walking…even slowly. You see, our mama has rheumatoid arthritis and some days are very painful. We do what is best for her though. We love all of your special pirple paw pics Sugar! Xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
SHE doesn’t do running. But we do when we’re off-lead.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
We kittehz do most of our running in our dreams! We are gonna try to get the Mommy out to the park with pics, though. Happy Thursday!
Great job you are doing. But us kitties prefer to nap with our humans 😉
Have a great day! Purrs
We love to run together. Only I can’t run fast enough to keep up with my dog so I have chosen the bicycle instead. Taking him for his daily run is something we both look forward too. He’s become much more calmer around the household and obedient and loyal towards me. I love the fact your dog is still getting many benefits from it despite being in her older years. She looks like she’s loving it and I love the pics with her ears flying high 🙂
Wish we could get out and run. Hey…wish we could get out and walk. But we stay in our own yard and run there. Too many wild stray animals in my hood and they might eat me!
We’re are walkers here…we go for miles and miles and climb through all kinds of terrains …..sadly running isn’t an option for mom….but that is okay because ultimately any exercise you can do with you dog is good exercise .
When I’m a senior myself I hope I’m half as youthful as you Sugar! Can’t wait to hear about the park.
I can’t run with Toby as he gets too excited and jumps up on me. But he runs well on lead with Ted. His favorite place to run though is the beach.
WE run when we see somethingy to CHASE…
WOW girrrrrl… you REALLY caught some AIR on your run!!!
Charley is so good at heel, so sometimes we trot along with him. Never a full out run though! Sugar you are looking good there running! I love your boots!
I love those flapping ears and the purple feet off the ground completely…
Sugar you look so cute running. Good for you! We used to run with mom, but now she ca’t run anymore. But we sure like to walk and hike, and run in the park.
Mom hates running and I hate swimming (which she loves) but I love to run. Opposites attract! Great photos and we have to check out Park Day! Love Dolly
Oh how I love to run. I love it love it. And I am a lucky pup cuz my MOM has a lot of great places she takes me to where I can run free. MOM is not much of a runner any more, but still we get out there and true I run more than her. But the hills she climbs and I run are a great work out for both of us.
Blessings,
Goose
We bet you know that we all love to run. But Mom can’t run with her bones issues. Every now and then one of our human brother-in-laws will take one of us at a time on a run with him. It is a lot of fun. Even Phantom loves to run.
Great action pics – your photographer does such a great job.
Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
Great tips on how to get started. I think when we move back home I’m going to put my peep on this running plan. I like knowing that we can start with a walk then a little run and build from there! thanks
Maggie
You go Sugar! Exercise is good. You are obviously having a great time by that smile
Benny & Lily
Sometimes we’ll run a bit but the blind trio are too busy stopping every few feet to sniff stuff. You look great running along there Sugar!
Sugar you always make me all happy inside’
Oh Sugar those photo’s made us laugh, your ears flapping up, how wonderful 🙂 Have a fantastic Thursday xx00xx
It looks like you are having such a terrific time running through the park Sugar!

Hi Sugar. I love to run, BUT until my leg is completely healed, Dr. Matt says no running, no jumping, no playing with other dogs, and no stairs. When Mom & Dad told him that the only way out of the house was to go down three steps, he said OK as long as they help me. My leg feels fine to me, but Mom is very strict about Dr. Matt’s rules. She says if we don’t follow them, it will just take longer for my leg to heal properly — and I’ll have to wait even longer to run and play with Shadow again.
I love to run, too — and I SO MISS having Callie running around the back yard with me, and to go to the park with Mom while Ducky’s at daycare playing with her doggie friends. At the park, though, we have to walk because Mom says they have leash laws and she doesn’t really like running — but she does walk faster than most humans at the park. I can hardly wait for Callie to be able to walk at the park with us again!
Oh yeah, we like to run with mom and dad!
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Sugar, I love your flying ears! You are a remarkable Golden! WOOF!
Running is great fun and great exercise just so long as people keep in mind that dogs overheat much more easily than people, and that the pavement is sometimes too hot for their paws.
I loves to run, but Momma not so much! So she takes me to the park where I can run and she can watch me.
It’s also impawtant to remember not to start running too early! When you’re young and your joints are still growing, too much repetitive pressure can cause long-term damage. Pups under 1 shouldn’t run, and you should start up gradually after that. Some vets say not until 2!
This is great! Sugar looks soooo happy! Me and boy run in short bursts. I’ll run him as long as he can stand it, then we walk, and then run a lil bit more. Running is good for all parties involved. Wish I was motivated to do it more (
Yes dogs love to run and yes Little Bit goes our every single morning for her workout. Every single morning.
Have a woof woof day Sugar. My best to your mom. 🙂
I love to jog alongside my Mum and Dad. If Dad takes me out on his own we go too fast, so I spend most of the run pulling him backwards to get home, unless I know we are on the home straight… then I pull him forwards. Running is fun, fun, fun 🙂
Sugar, you are such a tease. Everytime we think your going to spill the beans…it’s come back tomorrow. Okay, pal, we’ll see you then. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
Hey Sugar, You are some happy-looking pup when you run! Keep up the good work. (Still love those purple shoes!)
No running for us with peeps as I pull her over or jump on her. I do all my running vermin chasing. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
All our dogs have run in the HUGE off-leash park that we go too. Even if we are just walking, they run and come back, run and come back.
Our last two dogs we loved to run with – but now the hubs has serious knee issues, and I’ve had some foot/ankle problems, so we have never done a “real” run with Rita. I’m hoping my foot will eventually get better so I can run with her. I know she’s love it – although we’d probably only be able to do it in the cooler months since she gets too hot easily.
Go Sugar! My dogs love to run too, but I can’t run. Generally, I will get my husband to run with them for a bit. Or we just play fetch in the yard. Sometimes, Maya gets to go to the dog park where she can run (Pierson is not allowed at the dog park because he doesn’t get along well with other dogs).
That smile on your face Sugar is such a testament to the joy you find in running…I see that smile on Gizmo when he’s running free…There’s hops and leaps and moments of being airborne like you…It’s wonderful to see a healthy fit dog enjoying life
Mom loves running with dogs, my sister trained mom for her first marathon and ran up to 15 miles with her. The down side is that we have stamina, so when we take off, we don’t tire easily! My sister no longer runs and honestly, she never really liked running with mom. I enjoy it but can only go a few miles with my short legs but I am a good runner. Most of the time these days mom just runs alone and then walks us when she finishes as her cool down.
Our goal this year is to do more walking. I don’t walk the pups enough. They love it. I need to make sure they get this simple pleasure that is so good for them and me.
Sugar we love this post and all the gorgeous, active pictures of you. Your Golden smile is contagious mom is grinning like a Cheshire Cat….me I’m sleeping but if Mom is happy I’m happy.
Hugs madi your BFFF
Love the pictures of you running. I need to start running with Beamer because I haven’t started training for a 10km marathon I signed up for. Whoops 🙂
Glad to hear that you’ve still got muchos energy, even for a senior dog.
I love running!
Nola
Hi Y’all!
I love to run too. I have to be careful though or I knock my Human over.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
OH Miss Sugar…..I am with you. Running is great. Walking is great, hiking is great. And I will alwasy stand behind your purple paws. You look Marvelous in them.
Love
Bert
Looking great out there Sugar! Running agrees with you!
I can’t run but everyone else in my house can! So, I ride my bike and Shyla runs with me. I agree – it is a great way to help a dog burn energy and be happier! Love the purple pawz!
Sugar, love to see you running with your purple shoes on! Great tips – running just comes naturally to dogs – it’s not an effort like it can be for people, so let you dog RUN! Thanks for joining our Blog Hop.
OMD I love those pictures, it is fun to see each part of the body as you move, where the feet go, and especially the ears! That is very impressive that you are running so fast in your, um, golden years. Keep it up! And thanks for being a part of FitDog Friday!
You are more puppy than senior dog!! Keep up the great work, Sugar!!
Wyatt
Do. Run. Run – that’s what we always say – SPOT on with your tips to get started. We love the photos! Beautiful dog. Goes to show how staying healthy translates to extending the vitality of those puppy years!
I love watching my guys run, but I can’t run with them. Mostly because Delilah is super fast and has a tendency to ‘herd’ me. LOL
