In honor of National Walk Your Dog Week, we want to share
5 Walking Tips with Your Dog.
1) Commit to a TIME: It is important to set a schedule to eliminates any excuses. Walking your dog in the morning is an ideal time. Keep in mind, there are dogs that need longer/multiple walks.Walking is both beneficial for you and your dog.
2) Choose the RIGHT Collar/Harness and Leash: Many dogs are accustomed to wearing a regular collar rather than a harness. We use a short leather leash. Using a shorter leash provides more control and encourage a heel position, making your walk more relaxing. We are not a big fan of the retractable leash.
3) Be a Responsible Dog Owner: Always bring poop bag(s) and makes sure to pick up your dog’s waste, Scoop That Poop.
4) Bring Creativity into your Walking Route: Vary your walking paths. Be adventurous and explore new parks.
5) Enjoy the Moment: Unplug (no music/phone) and enjoy moment with your dog.Make your walk a special precious moment where you slow down and appreciate what’s around you especially your dog.
Happy National Walk Your Dog Week

All great tips Sugar. I like #4 and 5 best. Happy walking.

Very good tips Sugar. Being able to vary our route around here is difficult unless we drive somewhere. 🙁
Good advice Sugar
Benny & Lily
This is great advice! I’m not a big fan of the retractable leashes either.
Happy Thursday Sugar, What great hints you’ve given here. I am just getting ready to take Hunter on his walk. Our walking buddy is away so it is a different route we are taking. Have a great day!

Awww, Sugar. You look so happy on your walk!
Great tips, Sugar! I especially like #5 – I think need people need to be in tune with their dog(s) and paying attention to their surroundings, both for enjoyment and for safety!
These are great tips! Y’know, I brought my mom a poop bag dispenser for her leash (BarkWorld), and she didn’t think she’d use it. She loves it! No more stuffing WalMart bags in her pockets! I’ll try and sell her on the Fifth Paw next. 😉
thanks for your great tips, Sugar. To have a good leash and a comfy collar or harness is very important! have a golden thursday!
That would make such an excellent banner! Well done Sugar!
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley

Nice one Sugar. Have a tremendous Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
Love these tips! Have a great walk today!
Perfect tips, Sugar, and ones we follow–several times a day. 🙂
Great tips Sugar! Enjoy your walks!
Hear, hear! More walks for everyone! 😀
Great tips Sugar! Love your advice to slow down and enjoy it. I love doing that with Jack – he kind of gets in a zone and we just migrate…
Those are all such good suggestions. Especially the unplugging of your phone. It is the dog’s time. Take care.
Yes, those sound really terrific Sugar and happy walking!
you forgot one….get a dog that LIKES to take walks lol
We’re big supporters of walking and are definitely celebrating National Walk Your Dog Week
My people are 4 out of 5. Mom always scoops, I can tell time even on weekends and make my humans walk me accordingly, they never listen to music on our walks, and I have a sturdy leash and good collar/harness! I think we’re doing good.
We’re not very good at #1 and #4. We’re probably not very good at item #2 either considering Maya and Pierson are only occasionally good at heel. We’re not good at #1 because it really depends on the weather. In summer, I like to go in the morning. In winter, the afternoon. We’re not good at #4 because I like to stay close to home so it is generally the same old neighborhood for each walk.
Great tips! I think a valuable one is to unplug and enjoy it! Walks can be so fun and relaxing when we do that.
Great tips, Sugar. We like harnesses for the security and comfort of our dogs. We use a longer leash when we are on a trail with not much traffic that is away from the road, but other times we’ll use a shorter leash. There is nothing like a good walk to help clear the head and just take deep breaths and enjoy! We try to take different routes too to keep things interesting.
Great tips. It took us a long time to find the right harness and when we did, it made a world of difference on our walks.
Words of wisdom there Sugar. Think you’ve got a few walking miles under your belt by now so you’d know what your talking about. Like the harness & short leash – we prefer a bungy leash for a bit of give as my big boy not quite as well trained as you I think. Also like #4 – being creative. Dogs & humans both enjoy a bit of change & mixing it up makes it all the more fun. Thanks for hopping onboard for the Walk Your Dog BlogHop
This is great Sugar! Thank you so much! I use a leather leash with Kayo too and it’s perfect! These are unbeatable tips for making walks enjoyable! ;0)
Of course number 3 is my favorite, but I would remove the parentheses around the “s” in “bag(s),” as you never know what may happen on your walk. I also like number 4, “Bring creativity to your walking routine.” I heard of a study once that said people who always take the same route home from work every day are more at risk for alzheimer’s than people who vary their route. Exploring new routes isn’t just good for your dog, it’s good for you!
Tip #5 hits home Sugar…I see so many folks walking their pups with earplugs on…They’re missing so much bu not “being in the moment” right along with their dog
Awesome suggestions! 🙂 I especially like the one about setting a specific time for walks, I think this is the main reason I find myself skipping walks… Great article!
Do you have any tips for walking five dogs? Great article!
