Brushing your pet’s teeth regularly is the one and only effective protection to dental disease. Infographic below provided by PetCareRx.
Dental disease is caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar on pet’s teeth. When pets eat, bacteria multiply in their mouth. Plaque, a yellowish film, is formed on the teeth. Over time, the plaque hardens and forms tartar.
Last year, our post Brush Your Dog’s Teeth: Clean Teeth = Happy Dog + Longer Life was one of our 2013 popular posts. We’ve received many emails and compliments. Many were amazed with Sugar’s teeth as a senior dog. As a dog ages, the plaque and tartar builds up faster so brushing on a regular basis is very important. It is essential to have the proper tool, a dog toothbrush.
PetCareRx provided Sugar to try on EZDogToothbrush.
EZDog Toothbrush has 3 flexible heads, with gentle nylon bristles. It has a comfortable ergonomics which makes it easy to maneuver. The bottom of the handle is used to clean the dog’s tongue. With the triple head EZDog Toothbrush offers a unique 3D brushing of each tooth. It makes thoroughly brushing your dog’s teeth quicker.
For Toothpaste
Do you know that you can make your own toothpaste using simple ingredients?
How To Make Your Own Dog Toothpaste?
Ingredients: Liquid Broth (ex: chicken (you can make your own broth too)), baking soda, salt, coconut oil, cinnamon (optional)
1) Mix baking soda and salt with the liquid broth.
2) Add coconut oil to the mixture.
3) Optional: Add cinnamon to the mixture.
4) Mix well and Create a paste.
Baking soda is an abrasive that removes plaque. It kills the nasty germs and also whitens the dog’s teeth. Salt is also an abrasive that kills bacteria and gets rid of plaque on teeth. Cinnamon is a gentle abrasive that will make your dog’s breath smell better.
Sample Mixture
3 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/3 of salt, 1 tablespoon of liquid broth,
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
Why do I make my own toothpaste for Sugar?
When Sugar was a young pup, she had an allergic reaction on a name brand dog toothpaste. To be safe, I decide to make my own toothpaste.
It is important to use a proper method for brushing you dog’s teeth.
How To brush your dog’s teeth?
1) Allow your dog to get familiarize with the toothbrush.
2) Licking and tasting the toothpaste is natural.
3) Gently lift your dog’s lip.
4) Start at the back of your dog’s teeth.
5) Use a circular brush motion.
(on the EZDog Toothbrush, it’s recommended to use a linear strokes)

Takes great patience, I have tried to wash Doni’s teeth once , was really impossible
OUR mom was brushing Dog teefs WAY BACK before it was considered the RIGHT thingy to do… Other Peeps thought she was NUTS… There was NOTHING to use back then except Childrens Toothbrushes and BAKING SODA….. She would make a Baking Soda paste and dip the brush in and that is how she did it…
NOW there is CHICKEN PASTE…. which is OUR FAVORITE ONE… We get Brushed OFTEN… sometimes we think TOO often… butt we KNOW it is good fur us…
Hi Sugar, Thanks so much for this info. With our past dogs, we always provided beef knuckle bones for the dogs-it helped keep their teeth clean. I have tried to brush Hunter’s teeth but he needs to get used to it; he has a dry mouth(due to our climate)and I don’t want him to have to undergo yearly dental cleanings; we will if necessary but as you know they are so very expensive. I will check this toothbrush out and start on a regular basis. Thanks for the nudge.
