Pumpkin has many health benefits for a dog’s digestive health. For the past years, I’ve been consistent incorporating pumpkin into SUGAR’s diet. The 90% water content of pumpkin definitely helped improve SUGAR’s hydration.
Since it’s pumpkin season, I enjoy roasting pumpkin and making an easy dog safe pumpkin puree. I prefer giving SUGAR homemade pumpkin puree than canned pumpkin.
Homemade Pumpkin Puree vs Canned Pumpkin
For canned pumpkin, I use Nummy Tum-Tum made with 100% pure organic pumpkin.
Can you tell the difference between homemade pumpkin puree and canned pumpkin?
COLOR: Homemade pumpkin puree is lighter than the canned pumpkin.
TEXTURE: Canned pumpkin is thicker than homemade pumpkin puree. From Nummy Tum-Yum website, the different texture is due to the growing seasons of pumpkins.
Which one is the best?
TASTE: SUGAR loves both. I tasted it too. I find that the canned pumpkin has a ‘sweeter’ taste maybe because it’s made with organic pumpkin.
Do you give your dog canned pumpkin or do you make your own pumpkin puree?
We don’t usually give Toby pumpkin although we did try Weruva’s this month for Chewy.com and Toby loved it. When I make pumpkin puree I freeze for human consumption in breads and soups 🙂
I love pumpkin… it’s the only vegetable stuff I really like… the mama made me some pumpkin puree on howl-o-ween and I cleaned my bowl in 87 nano seconds :o)
In California (and in TX), we use organic canned puree, but when I lived in NJ…I used to love puree-ing it myself to use!
Mom tried to give me canned pumpkin once…I had to remind her I don’t eat technicolor food.
But I think anything made by loving hands must taste the best
Hugs madi your bfff
We eat a teaspoon of pure canned punkins once a day

Anything fresh and homemade is always better, but we will our pumpkin whatever way Mom can fix it:)

Mine would love either
I buy pumpkins in the fall especially for making homemade puree! If I get enough, it can last us almost all year (I freeze it). But I sometimes buy organic canned pumpkin if I do run out.
I can’t believe the difference in the colors! I do find the homemade stuff has a very high water content, and often have to drain it multiple times for using for baking.
I followed your links for how to roast a pumpkin. I’ve tried it different ways and every year I forget which way is best! Roasting it just cut in half is definitely easiest.
At least with homemade, you know what’s in it!
Yum!
We don’t like pumpkin but that Nummy Tum Tum is made in our town! Our neighbor (Dooney’s dad) is one of the farm managers for the farm that produces it too. Small world!
We use homemade puree, but it would be so convenient to have canned available sometimes – it’s not readily available down here in New Zealand. On the bright side, it’s commonly used a side-dish and savory ingredient here, so we can easily get a wide variety of lovely pumpkins and squash all year round for roasting. I like to bulk roast and freeze it as chunks instead of pureeing up front for easier ready-use in any quantity for both dogs and my own cooking/baking.
Yes! I give Giselle and Trent gives his dog canned organic pumpkin ever day – year round. Great post, Rosalyn! I have never done the home made. Love for a Sugar!
