On a recent PetSmart Charities survey, only 20% of 1,800 animal welfare organizations receive pet food donations and about 8 percent are on contract with pet food brands to receive subsidized pet food.

Also, according to David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, not all pets in need live in shelters. Some pets in need live with pet parents who rely on food banks. Pet food is rare in food banks and one in seven Americans rely on these facilities. Many of these pet parents sacrifice their own food, feeding their beloved pets human food to ensure they have something to eat.

The Arizona Humane Society – Emergency Animal Medical Technician program was established in 2002 as the first of its kind in Arizona and devoted to saving sick, injured, abused and homeless animals.
